Now, I’m sure this has been talked about in the past, but there are new people here, and I’ve never read anyone’s opinions on the subject matter, so I want to do it again.
This Friday, I got into another debate with my friend Liz on the topic. She feels that our current drug laws are simply in place so we can help drug cartels in other countries so our government can get money out of them, or use them as an excuse to overthrow foreign countries, and that all drugs should be legalized. She believe all drugs should be legalized, and that those who don’t feel so have simply “bought into the propaganda that the drug war is something good.”
Now, I don’t know about all that stuff, but what I do know is that it’s hard enough getting decent service virtually anywhere you go without the employees stepping out periodically for their herroine break (a little overexhaguration, sure, but what the hey). I believe that pot isn’t nearly as dangerous or frightening as the media makes it out to be. I have plenty of friends who smoke out, and it basically leads to hanging out. Nothing terribly dangerous or life threatening there. So, that’s something I feel the government could legalize, tax the crap out of, and maybe help bring the cost of cigarrettes down (they’re like, $7.50 a pack in New York now, what the fuck?). But shit like crack, crystal meth, and especially LSD should NOT be legalized in my opinion. Sure, anyone who wants to get them can find ways, but to make them readily available to everyone would, in my mind, increase the amount of abuse as well as the number of deaths caused by overdose. I doubt crime would go up because of it, but it still has too many negative consequences. Especially LSD. Because she only has one experience with it and that involved staring at a spinning cat face on the wall for several hours, Liz thinks LSD is perfectly fine for store shelves. I just think that fucking idiotic.
