Oh there’s nothing lenient about the Oregon drunk driving laws that would have enticed the father into bringing her here–it’s just that the cops didn’t know what had happened and even with alcohol on the father’s breath the hospital staff didn’t know enough about the circumstances to realize that law enforcement should be notified–they, at least, were more concerned about the well being of the child than anything else, unlike her shiteatin’ sperm donor…
That was totally the way I took it. I was kind of surprised that anyone took you literally, especially since the phenomenon you’re referring to has been discussed more than once around here.
Just to throw Max a bit of support, he’s not the only one who has noticed that trend. And that’s all I have to say about this subject.
Except… what a fuckin’ bastard. Who was it that left his drunk ass alone with the kids?
I’m going to print that article out and post it on my neighbor’s door. A couple years ago he was towing his kids up and down the street on a sled behind his pickup truck. Another neighbor called me and asked me if I could stop him, as apparently other neighbors had asked him to stop before to no avail. I had to show him my badge and threaten to put his kids in shelter care until Child Protective Services sorted his stupid ass out before he agreed to stop. Apparently he had been doing it for years before I moved in.
I don’t think this guy is evil. I think he’s just cataclysmically stupid and it ended up costing his daughter her life.
Even stupid, irresponsible parents love their kids. I don’t think the fact that he called a lawyer indicates that he does not. People do really, really strange things when they’re in shock and due to the fact it looks like he’s been in trouble before, he probably was functioning on auto-pilot and did what his lawyer had drilled into him: call for representation if anything happens.
Do I think he should get off scott-free? Of course not, and it’s highly unlikely that he will, even after lawyering-up and avoiding the blood test (though I think it’s unlikely the latter was by design.)
Though it seems callous, he actually did the smart thing, from a criminal justice standpoint by calling his attorney. Our system grants representation to even the most heinous, reprehensible characters out there, and any lawyer will tell you the smart thing to do when there is a criminal act involved is demand an attorney and don’t talk to the cops. He* does* still have rights, even if he is a scumbag and the presence of an attorney ensures that they’re respected.
Chalk me up as another who immediately understood what MTV was talking about.
I’m not sure I would make that assumption. I think you read that as the paramedic station was 1/4 mile away, while I read it as there happened to be paramedics in the area – which assdad certainly would not have known about. Though my assumption may not be as reasonable, upon thinking about it. Maybe someone from that area knows for sure.
At the same time, if there is any paramedic dispatch in my neighborhood, I certainly don’t know about it. I don’t pay attention to that sort of thing.
Well in all fairness, when was the last time you heard about a black person doing something so dumb?
Black people never do dumb stuff?
This reminds me of D.L. Hughley on The Kings of Comedy, talking about how you never see black people doing daredevil stuff like skydiving, because simple activities like going to a disco or driving down the freeway are life-threatening enough.
I think you are all jumping the gun a bit.
First off, from the picture that wall/bench looks like it was incredibly negligently constructed and sited. I think the property owners should have anticipated that drunks would be spinning donuts in their parking lot with their kids tied to their rear bumpers, and either placed the wall elsewhere, or made it soft and squishy so that the reasonably foreseeable impact would not have been fatal.
So long as we’re talking about the property owners - that icy parking lot was little more than an open invitation for parents to drag their kids behind their pickups. Can you say “attractive nuisance”? What would it have cost - maybe a buck’s worth of salt and they would have eliminated any possibility of this unfortunate accident happening.
I’d also need to look into the tube they were riding. I’d expect it to have large indelible notices informing folks that it was not intended to be towed behind trucks in snowy parking lots. And it should have been spelled out in easily understandable diagrams to be understood by drunken drivers. What would that have cost - a couple of cents worth of ink/paint to save this little girl’s life!
And am I the only person suspicious that the teenager who was also on the tube escaped unscathed? Hmmm. Gonna need to look into that fella’s background (and net worth.)
I’m sure if you consider the totality of the circumstances, you will realize that the poor grieving father was truly the victim here.
I could see his tongue in his cheek from waaaaaaaay the hell over here.
I know he was joking I just think those kinds of jokes are moronic.
… et al.
Different deal. The OP is pitting the dad. The dad is an asshole regardless the cuteness or color of the child. The dad is an asshole regardless of media attention.
Steven
Wait, wait, don’t tell me, let me guess – you’re an attorney who handles personal injury litigation?
I’ll see your father letting his daughter die, and raise you a father killing his wife and then trying to pin the murder on his 12-year-old daughter.
Okay, he hasn’t been convicted yet. But since:
I’m guessing the murder was not done by a 12-year-old girl.
