We have an old Maytag dryer that we need to replace, the motor burned out (we were told the dryer was made in the 70s). It is an electric dryer that was there when we bought the house in 1997, but there IS a gas hookup in the laundry room.

Any particular advice on what to look for when purchasing dryers…or particular brands? Planning to take a look at the Kenmores at Sears at the very least.

IIRC, gas dryers are more expensive initially but have cheaper operating costs…true?

Is hooking up the gas line to the dryer something I could do or should I get plumber to do that?
TIA
If you’re at all handy, and there’s already a gas line running to the dryer (ie all you have to do is turn it off, hook it up, turn it on) then I’d say go for it. Gas is still cheaper than electric for drying.
I’d recommend going to your local library and looking at consumer reports for recommendations on dryers. Keep this in mind: With most appliances, you do get what you pay for. The pricier models last longer and are more reliable (in general) than the bargain specials, as well as having more features.
Oh, and if you’d prefer, you can always look up freecycle. Since lots of people just HAVE to have a matching washer and dryer (even if they keep them in the basement were no one can see), when they replace one, they replace the other, and it can cost a prettyp enny to dispose of them, so you see them left out on curbs or on sites like frecycle.
