The point is possibly quite moot by now, but if he’s got the @ symbol on screen on his playstation, it’s one click to type @ rather than 2 clicks for “at”.

My friend, it is based on a concept that is apparently somewhat foreign to you: common sense. If one speaks, reads and writes the English language correctly, then one can communicate effectively with others. If one writes in the manner that you do, then one is immediately written off as a retard and ignored, because the only message that you are communicating is that you are a retard.

… while for some, the message that they are retards is communicated by their posts’ actual content .
Right, Humpy ?

Clearly, it is some form of shorthand slang, using the abbreviation for New Mexico as some sort of indirect cultural reference. For what, I do not know.

The tragedy here, people, is that we’re fighting the inevitable. This post is representative of the logical end-point of the evolution of English. For those of you that like to say that language is descriptive and promote such views, this is your poster child. In another generation this will be perfectly acceptable because the people that speak this gibberish will be firmly entrenched in positions of authority. Thanks for nothing.

When we get to that generation then I’ll deal with it. Meanwhile, this message board operates under a different set of guidelines today.

Got this in a email a few years ago:
The European Commission just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty’s Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase in plan that would be known as “EuroEnglish”.
In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of the “k”. This should klear up konfusion and all keyboards kan have 1 less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with the “f”. This will make words like “fotograf” 20% shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e”'s in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go away.
By the 4th year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and similar changes vuld of kurs be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
After zis fifz yer, ve vil have a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.

This is what I’m thinking. I’ll admit to being a little bit fascinated by the OP’s (now thankfully abandoned) “unorthodox” writing style. Are there really people who communicate like that on a regular basis? Are we dealing with something more like a written dialect rather than just atrocious spelling? You’d think that to achieve any kind of fluency in that kind of shorthand, you have to use it a lot in your daily life, as much as is the case for standard English. Presumably there are also shared rules and standards for which abbreviations, substitutions and so forth to use. I imagine that if I tried writing like the OP, not really knowing those rules, the result would look as much like gibberish to the OP as his earlier posts do to me. Would I be right in thinking that?
Actually, why am I not just asking the OP this? Hey, Gateway , what’s the deal?

What’s shorthand for “meh”? Writing out “meh” in full overstates my interest in the OP’s concerns.

I got the idea in middle school to take notes with abbreviations and symbols because it is faster. A lot of people type on chatrooms in a similar style. The person in middle school actually said to take notes like you are in a chatroom. In any case, that has been how I have been writing things a lot.

Writing like that is great for taking notes or chatrooming, but not so much for message boards like this one.

I’m really glad I didn’t see this until now and that I read the whole thread before replying. Thank you for being willing to read our collective point of view and changing your posting style quickly. It really speaks well of you as a person and new Doper.
One thing I’d like to add, not because you need any more convincing or anything, but just because I think it’s interesting: when I read posts like your first one, not even considering the content, just the style, my impression is that the writer is itching for a fight, is unwilling to put forth much effort, and is unwilling to change. These are my prejudices/preconceptions, and I wasn’t really aware of them until this thread. Obviously, in just a few hours, your demonstrated that you’re not any of those things that I thought you were reading the first few posts.
So, I’m going to work to try to be more aware of my bias, and not jump down the throat of posters who use textspeak. I will continue to ask them not to do it here, and perhaps save this thread so they can see some great arguments against it and a wise person who decided to change when presented with those arguments. But I will try to do so without a preconception that they’re going to resist and never change. Without the snark that I would otherwise employ on a poster I consider a “drive-by” or otherwise too annoying/stupid/stubborn to waste time on.
I would not have had this epiphany if you’d dug your heels in. So thank you for not digging your heels in, both because it will make your future posts easier to read, and also because it taught me a little something about the world and about myself this morning. And it’s not even 9am!

Yeah! Good stuff!

It seems that the new luser “Gateway ” is a fitting tribute to the phenomenon.
