Dudes of straight dope, if I type in proper english...

And what the fuck is that supposed to mean? Spell it out, you lazy teenager, what with your Playboxes, Eye Phones and the Google!

[shakes fist]

The point is possibly quite moot by now, but if he’s got the @ symbol on screen on his playstation, it’s one click to type @ rather than 2 clicks for “at”.

My friend, it is based on a concept that is apparently somewhat foreign to you: common sense. If one speaks, reads and writes the English language correctly, then one can communicate effectively with others. If one writes in the manner that you do, then one is immediately written off as a retard and ignored, because the only message that you are communicating is that you are a retard.

… while for some, the message that they are retards is communicated by their posts’ actual content.

Right, Humpy?

Clearly, it is some form of shorthand slang, using the abbreviation for New Mexico as some sort of indirect cultural reference. For what, I do not know.

Nah, never mind.

When we get to that generation then I’ll deal with it. Meanwhile, this message board operates under a different set of guidelines today.

Too stupid did not read.

Got this in a email a few years ago:

This is what I’m thinking. I’ll admit to being a little bit fascinated by the OP’s (now thankfully abandoned) “unorthodox” writing style. Are there really people who communicate like that on a regular basis? Are we dealing with something more like a written dialect rather than just atrocious spelling? You’d think that to achieve any kind of fluency in that kind of shorthand, you have to use it a lot in your daily life, as much as is the case for standard English. Presumably there are also shared rules and standards for which abbreviations, substitutions and so forth to use. I imagine that if I tried writing like the OP, not really knowing those rules, the result would look as much like gibberish to the OP as his earlier posts do to me. Would I be right in thinking that?

Actually, why am I not just asking the OP this? Hey, Gateway, what’s the deal?

What’s shorthand for “meh”? Writing out “meh” in full overstates my interest in the OP’s concerns.

For the win!

I got the idea in middle school to take notes with abbreviations and symbols because it is faster. A lot of people type on chatrooms in a similar style. The person in middle school actually said to take notes like you are in a chatroom. In any case, that has been how I have been writing things a lot.

Thank you

Writing like that is great for taking notes or chatrooming, but not so much for message boards like this one.

What tune?

Yeah! Good stuff!
Glad to have helped!
I feel if one has a valid point then it can be a positive to take it into account.
Cheers!

You did this on purpose, didn’t you. Is it a meta thing?

Ever hear of the term “Eternal September”? It occurs to me, just now, that this month is the twentieth anniversary of the original Eternal September.

It seems that the new luser “Gateway” is a fitting tribute to the phenomenon.
