Dueling Quotes

“Heav’n from all creatures hides the book of Fate,
All but the page prescribed, their present state;
From brutes what men, from men what spirits know;
Or who could suffer being here below?”
–Alexander Pope, “Essay on Man”

Scylla said:

“Thicker than arguments, temptations throng;
At best more watchful this, but that more strong.
The action of the stronger to suspend,
Reason still use, to Reason still attend.”
–Alexander Pope, “Essay on Man”

Psalm 139:16 “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”

“His knowledge measured to his state and place,
His time a moment, and a point his space.
If to be perfect in a certain sphere,
What matter soon or late, or here or there?”
–Alexander Pope, “Essay on Man”

(Is it just me, or oughtn’t someone be quoting from Cecil by now?)

Lynxgyrl said:

“Let Power or Knowledge, Gold or Glory, please,
Or (oft more strong than all) the love of ease;
Thro’ life 'tis follow’d, ev’n at life’s expense;
The merchant’s toil, the sage’s indolence”
–Alexander Pope, "Ess…ah…
Sorry Lynxgyrl. It’s gotten to be a reflex, you know. I picked Pope, so I gotta stick with him–even if I am sick of the whiny, pious twit. Besides, invoking Cecil would be overkill, wouldn’t it?

I’m retiring from the field for the holidays. I swear, if this thread is still going when I get back, I’m going to post “Alexander Pope’s birth” in the “erase a single event from history” thread.

Have a great 4th!

All right, you; one last quote, just to keep us warm:

“One self-approving hour whole years outweighs
Of stupid starers and loud huzzas:
And more true joy Marcellus exiled feels
Than Cæsar with a senate at his heels.”
–Alexander Pope, “Essay on Man”

John 15:11-12 “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full- This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you”

E-797 [799]
Here the Romans cut out the tongue of the pope Leo and put out his eyes and made him flee his seat; and immediately afterwards by God’s help he could see and speak, and was pope again as he was before…

I confess I’ve been absent as of late:

“I have been long a sleeper; but, I hope,
My absence doth neglect no great designs,
Which by my presence might have been concluded.”
–Richard III, Act 3, Scene IV

However, as I mentioned in some thread or another that I was busy flirting in (ie, I don’t remember which one), I told Daniel that I’d always intended to come back into this thread, and have been poring over the bard’s works for my eventual re-entry into the fray.

(I confess I’ve spent most of my efforts on Shakespeare to find flirting material because…well, frankly, it’s more FUN!) :smiley:

(Hell, it’s even gotten me on a few laminated lists and crush lists even though I’m an incredibly ugly piece o’ crap in real life!)

Anyway, to Daniel and the others participating in this thread: if you want to end it and make Daniel the winner, that’s fine with me. Otherwise, I’m very nearly ready to make my return (couple days should do it):

“Redeeming time when men think least I will.”
–King Henry IV, Part 1, Act 1, Scene ii

So let me know if you want to take your victory, or if you (foolishly) want me to continue my research and debate some more. If the latter:

“Rebuke and dread correction wait on us
And they shall do their office”
–King Henry IV, Part 1, Act 5, Scene i

Dry, I will accept 2sense’s accolade, altho I think we ALL 'won". However, when you are ready “big boy”, start a NEW thread, and we’ll start up again. It seemed to be popular.

Thank you one & all, and especially 2sense & dry.
