I started a job today (yea!). It is a contract position, through an agency and all, with all of the advantages (more money, overtime, somebody to do your taxes) and disadvantages (why do you think they call us “temps?”) that are entailed.
As the day ended, my supervisor pointed out that, since the position would be salaried if it were not contract, I should not bill for hours beyond my official eight. Fine, I’ll just work eight. But no-o-o-o-o! Working an additional hour or two would be educational and great experience. I reminded him of the terms of my contract (straight time after forty hours, but still overpaid). But think of all that experience! And everybody else in the office does it!
Needless to say, twenty minutes later I was in my pimp’s, uh I mean, agent’s office telling him how this bozo was trying to rip him off (Dale Carnegie sez to always start by telling the other person how a situation affects them). And I shan’t return to that company tomorrow.
I am shocked, simply shocked, that this guy would A) violate his contract like that–WITH WITNESSES; 2) ask me to violate my contract, too; and III) ask me to give up money to do it!
The way he phrased it, I felt like giving him time for free was like a bribe to keep my job. I get a small inkling of what sexual harassment is like.
Thanx for letting me vent. Anybody else with a dumb work story?
