Dune Part 2 Question (Spoilers…I guess)

Does everything in Part 2 take place in less than 9 months?

Well, no, but on the other hand they took liberties with the story, so maybe the timeline was deliberately hazy?

I don’t think anybody is hazy on the length of human gestation. I’m pretty sure that fetus is special in some way, but does that also include the amount of time it spends in the womb?

I do not recall that they mentioned it, one way or the other. In fact, other than one person saying it was an “abomination”, was there any on-screen talk about how weird the fetus was?

Well, Alia is not born during the movie, so yes, it took place in less than gestation time.

There were multiple times Jessica mentioned Alia speaking to her from the womb.

How long is it in the book. What age is Alia when she kills Harkkonen? I am aware they apparently don’t have her kill him in this movie, but how old was she in the book?

Four when she kills the Baron.

This seems like the right amount of time for Paul to return from the desert.

well in the Lynch version, they showed Paul leading a raid and said they’d been fighting the Harkonnen for 2 years …

the reason she’s so weird is pauls mom was pregnant when she drank the spice potion in the Fremen initiation and since pauls mom had witch powers it amplified them

Yeah. And that’s the impression you would get from watching the film, except for the fact that Lady Jessica is pregnant through the entirety of the movie.

I wonder what possessed them to eliminate child-Alia.

Yes, but in the book people gossip about how weird she is. With the film having her not born yet, there is not much to notice. They would presumably notice if the pregnancy lasted 4 years, though.

I forget how they talk about her in the book, but it is insane to picture a baby that talks and is fully intelligent, but the TV adaptation just didn’t show that and we see her as a little girl. It’s not easy to express that the girl is hyper-intelligent, but the brief scenes in the TV version worked adequately.

Then when the made Children of Dune, they made the gap between books longer. Alia and Leto II are about 20-22 years old or so and it makes the visual experience better than if they were kids.

Aging up? I get it.

Eliminating her from being born in the first book? Weird? Making Paul kill the bad guy…I wouldn’t have. I get it, but I would not have.

A sandworm question: what do those things eat? Whatever it is, a worm would have to eat a lot to power the kind of muscles it would take to burrow through sand at any kind of speed.

Sand plankton - which I think are also an earlier phase of the sandworm life cycle.

Here is the spice cycle. I never understood where exactly the stuff came from.

Clearly there’s something missing from our understanding of the sandworm life cycle, since there’s no obvious place for energy to enter the described system. A species can’t just feed on itself. Maybe sand plankton have a photosynthetic symbiont and spend some time on the surface where they can get sunlight.

Long enough that Paul and Chani have a son, who’s killed by a raid on the sietch.

A species could feed on itself, given an external energy source like photosynthesis as you mention. But I don’t think sand plankton is a single species, just as the plankton in Earth’s oceans is not a single species.
