DUNE question

In Frank Herbert’s DUNE, There is mention of an Orange Catholic
Bible.

Does this imply in their past (our future) there was a unification
of the Roman and Anglican Rites?

Hello again, Enola.

Excerpts from the OCB appear as chapter headings throughout the novels, and the actual texts imply a synthesis of Christian and Islamic theology and teaching. I leave Judaism out because none of the excerpts seem to have a direct connection to Judaic teaching, as far as I can tell. Not that I am an expert.

So whether the use of the word “Orange” in the title is reference to Anglicans/Orangemen – which is a good guess – or something else, I don’t think we know.

A lot of the historical underpinnings of the Imperium and its society are kept very vague if not completely unexplained.

There is an entry in the Dune Encyclopedia about the origins of the OC bible. I can’t recall it off the top of my head, but I’ll look it up when I get home. Of course the DE is not considered canon.

MMDNV.

Not a Dune expert… but there was a bit in the second Dune book (I think. Maybe in the appendix, if there was one?) about a whole bunch of religion experts getting together and taking all of the good bits out of several different religions, and sticking them together. They got in big trouble for it, eventually, but the book caught on, it seems, since it was still in use at least a few centuries after publication…

Basically, the Orange Catholic Bible was the result of every major religion getting together and hashing out their differences to create a single amalagation of all the religions. There was a lot of in fighting, political intrigue, and a couple of civil wars sparked off by this. This is what I recall from something I read, but I can’t remember which book.

That would be the book Dune itself (or at least one of the appendices), which details the activities of the C.E.T., the Council for Ecumenical Translation, meeting on, IIRC, Hawaii, and putting the OCB together. They incorporate bits of every major religion, not just JudeoChristIslam. There’s a list (admittedly non-canon) in the Dune Encyc. of 101 religious organizations that contributed to the C.E.T. Also the “Orange” = “Sectarian” link appears there, but not in Dune itself.

Just for pedant points, ‘orange’ does not normally indicate Anglican, but rather protestants in general - I believe it comes from William of Orange who was, IIRC, Dutch.

On the subject of Dune, can anyone explain to me what the hell was going on at the end of ‘Chapter House’? Who/What were those face dancers with the ‘net’ meant to be?

errm, short answer? Frank Herbert and his wife.
Long answers are found At the Dune FAQ as any net search on “Dune Face Dancer Marty Daniel” would show you.

Thanks - I’ll admit I have never actually looked for the answer - reading the post made me think of the question, as I was just re-reading the books last week.

sigh

I,… I am sorry.
I only found out about the question moments ago…

hangs head in shame

What? You hadn’t seen it as one of many possible questions? Darn precience is so unreliable
