OK, I just got finished watching the second night of the Sci-Fi Channel’s Dune miniseries. I am really liking it. Yes, there are inconsistencies, (like that whole thing with Irulan and Feyd… it’s been a while since I read the books, but sure don’t remember that) but anyway, any changes you would make?
Yes, but Chani as played by Sean Young in the David Lynch movie.
On whole, I like the new movie. The Harkonnens are done much better than in Lynch’s film. Also the script is closer to the feel of the book than in the first movie. Which makes the alterations that much more maddening.
The main thing I would change is the sfx. Badly done CGI is worse than badly done stop-motion.
I am liking the plot changes as well, I think the pacing of the story is great. The special effects look terrible though. I had read they were supposed to be spectacular, but these were just lame. Chani is quite the hottie in this film, too.
I only got to see a small part of this one, and none of the first.
My only comment: Why in the world did they make the blue eyes of the natives glow? It really looked lame when the Fremen were supposed to be lurking in the shadows and you could spot every one of them by their headlights.
Has anyone heard when they’re going to show the series again? I was on a plane for the first night, and my VCR crapped out on me.
We watched the second night, and I have to agree the effects really sucked. At one point, it was VERY obvious that Paul and Jessica were walking on some sand with a backdrop of a desert behind them. I liked the worms, though. It seems as though they spent all the fx money on the worms, and realized afterwards that they’d need some other effects, too.
I especially like that they seem to be sticking to the plot line more than David Lynch’s version, except for the whole Irulan/Feyd thing. What’s up with that? Who wanted to know more about Irulan? Dull whiney woman. If they had to add more, show us something about Stilgar, or Liet-Kynes, or just about anybody but her.
