I have a five hour layover at the airport. Arrive at noon, leave at five. I Googled it and read the first ten pages, but all I could discover is there are ATMs, shops, restaurants and a 30 minute free WiFi. Anyone familiar with the airport? Good food, etc? Should I make a dash to the city? It is close and serviced by taxis, trains and buses. Thanks all.
I’ve spent a bit of time in the Dusseldorf airport on several occasions. It’s a reasonably nice airport, with some shopping and some “fast-foodish” restaurants. The food that I’ve had there isn’t bad, but it’s not something to go out of your way for.
If you have five hours in the airport, going into the city may not be all that practical. Figure that it will take you an hour to get off the plane, out of the airport and into the city. If it takes you the same, or a little bit more coming back (you will need to be at the gate at least 20 minutes prior to departure to avoid problems), then you don’t end up with a lot of time in the city.
One alternative, if you’re interested, is to go hang out in the Hugo Junkers Lounge at the airport. If you don’t have a card to give you access, it’ll cost you €21 to get in. Free alcohol, sandwiches, snacks and coffee, and free WiFi that’s not time-limited, as well. I’ve spent a few hours there on several different occasions, and it’s not a bad place to pass some time.
Thank you for your reply Parx. Looks like Hugo Junkers is the place to hang out. Thanks for the tip.
