Dutch Prins Friso , has very serious brain damage

Sad day in Holland,

The second son of Queen Beatrix had a Ski accident last week,

today there was a press conference from the Hospital
and the news was not good

Prince Friso was second in line to the throne, who had give up his claim

He wanted to marry a girl who was once friends (or even a lover of) with a famous Dutch Gangster (well famous in Holland that is)…
when you are in line to the Royal throne you have to ask permission from the Dutch Parliament, and because they wouldn’t sanction the marriage he chose leave the Royal Family

I do not realy follow the Royal family, but it left me feeling unexpected sad
Like the most of Holland

:frowning:

Very, very sad.

But hell, the rest of the Royal Family are skiing in Lech.

Do we know where this Dutch gangster was at the time of the ‘accident’?

dead

That’s very sad. He was trapped under an avalanche. Nothing could be done to prevent that. And his family remains in Lech to support him while he is in the hospital. I doubt they are on the slopes.

I’m very sorry to hear that, most of all for his wife and their little girls.

That’s a damn good alibi.

Twice in the last week there have news reports of thesesaving people’s lives in avalanches that killed or injured others, including the one that injured the Prince. One would think he could have afforded one and from the looks of them they’re not much bigger than a regular backpack.
This is a terrible tragedy that could have been mitigated w/ better equipment.

Thoughts for Holland and its monarchy :frowning:

At what point is CPR no longer prudent? He was in cardiac arrest for almost an hour, the first 20 minutes with no resuscitation attempts (since he was buried). I suppose you always hope for the best and maybe get a miracle, but how many people actually experience meaningful survival at that point? The damage was probably all done before they even got him out of the snow.

Very sad day for the Dutch royal family. And I feel so badly for his wife and young daughters.

There’s an emergency medicine saying: “You’re not dead until you’re warm and dead”. You may have heard of the cases where someone who seems dead actually is resuscitated after being found hypothermic or in an icy river. Sometimes the cold temperatures are protective of the brain to some degree, which is why in recent years hospitals have started intentionally cooling down the bodies of people resuscitated after a cardiac arrest. The hope is that keeping their brain cool will lessen the damage caused by the lack of circulation.
So, yeah, I’m guessing that the fact that he was buried in snow probably was a factor in why they tried to save him even though normally the chances of bringing back someone who had been down that long would be nil. There is also the factor that he’s royalty, so they may have decided to make a heroic effort even knowing that it would almost certainly fail just because it would look bad to not even try. Similar to how most of the time ER staff will put in an extra effort trying to bring back a child or young person who is in cardiac arrest because psychologically you feel like you have to at least try even if you know it probably won’t work.

So if he suffers massive brain damage he’ll be The Autist Formerly Known As Prince?

Probably true, but there are cases of people retrieved from cold conditions who were under for longer periods of time who made full neurological recoveries.

As a result, the guiding medical principle (said only somewhat tongue in cheek) is that a person isn’t really to be pronounced dead until they’re warm and dead.

Oops, I see I’m just parroting lavenderviolet’s post.

As for the OP, Wij wensen jullie veel sterkte met het grote verlies van je man en jullie vader.

However, the first link in the OP says he and his friends were skiing off trail. That may have played a part.

Ooooh, you are evil. But so funny.

I saw this in the news when it happened, but I hadn’t heard anything more. I’m sorry for the entire family, and also for him. Sad news.

Such sad news for the family. My heart goes out to them and to the Dutch citizens. Poor Queen Beatrix, I hope the media leave her be.

That’s disgusting.
