DVD burning questions

I would like to edit a few DVD’s in my collection and re-burn them. I’m not talking about borrowing or renting movies and copying them, or any funny business.

Specifically, I want to take most of the Jar Jar scenes out of Star Wars and burn the edited copy to DVD. This would be for my own personal entertainment, not for sale, lease, rent, giveaway, whatever.

Is this illegal? Is there user-friendly video editing software, preferably freeware?

Just curious.

Legaly you have the right to make a personal backup, and also to switch formats (such as from VHS to DVD or tape to CD).

Cutting scenes out and editing the menu appropriately might change the legal questions, but I doubt it as long as you’re not giving away copies or, worse, selling copies.

This is significantly more complated to do than your standard copying for backu purposes though. You’ll have to:

Rip the video from the DVD to your hardrive.

Edit the video to remove the unwanted scenes.

Re-author a DVD (you can probably use some of the ascets from the original DVD, but either way you’ll probably have to do some editing here.

Burn the finished product.

Try http://www.videohelp.com/ they MIGHT have some turotial on how to do this.
