DVD burning questions

  1. I have a relatively new computer with Athlon 3800+ CPU and 1GB RAM. Shouldn’t this be able to burn DVDs at more than 5x speed? What are some possible bottlenecks? I’ve tried both an internal DVD burner and an external USB2 drive, both of which are supposed to be 12x drives, and getting similar performance. I’ve checked that DMA is enabled on all IDE drives. The USB hub says “USB2 high speed” on it.

  2. I’ve figured out how to transfer MPEG2 video files from my TiVo to the PC. What’s the simplest method of editing these to remove commercials and burning video DVD disks? (That is, what’s the most hassle-free software to use?)

A machine that speed could easily do 16x. USB probably as well, but keep in mind that things can be less than ideal in real life concerning USB speeds. Maybe it’s the discs?

You should check out the videohelp site for more info about this as well as software.

And if you do find a good video splitter, let me know. I’ve tried several and they were all crap.

Here is an Anadtech review that will tell you what realworld burn speeds should be for 16X (theoretical max for single layer) drives and it clocks in at around 50% of the stated burn multiple (ie 16X = 8X) . If your drive is 12X your real world 6X results are not that far from the range of expected real world performance.

One thing that can make a big difference is media and firmware. Update your drive to the latest firmware and try different media. Oddly some of the most generic & least expensive media gives the best results oin many DVD drives.

Some programs will only burn media at the rated speed, although I believe you can change the settings, it’s not advised.

For example. I have a 16x burner, but all my Taiyo Yudens are 8x, so they burn at 8x.
