I almost never actually go to sites that spam me. Like maybe 3 times ever, but this was one of them: http://www.dvdmegapacks.com/ 50 movies on 12 double sided DVDs for under $30…
I was looking at the Sci-Fi one and also the cartoon one (which is only $20) but I’m skeptical. Is this fo’ real? Or is this some guy in his basement with a VCR and a DVD burner drive or something?
They’re for real. Don’t go looking for quality, though. There’s a lot of public domain stuff. The Metropolis will be the extremely crappy copy that’s been available for years.
Still, you can’t beat the price. You can have several MST3K parties with this stuff.
OMG. The Horror Classics DVD includes “Beast of the Yucca Flats”. My nomination for the worst film of all time. Considering the inferiority of most movies (except the public domain stuff like “Metropolis”), the price is not unreasonable. Athough “Day of the Dead” has its fans.
How do they fit 50 movies onto 24 (probably single layer because double layer costs more) sides? That’s what, two movies per side for 22 sides, and 3 movies per side for the other two? Do they pick the shortest three movies for those unlucky discs or something?
Hmm. Two movies per layer, when most DVDs these days have two layers per movie. Not incredibly high picture/sound quality, but then again maybe the source didn’t look that good to begin with.
Also, they should reall stock more. Looks like every single thing on that site is probably going to sell out within three days.
I’m not sure about this, but it might not be standard DVD format… I think there are some other formats you can encode movies on with a DVD burner, and they’ll play on most DVD players, but not quite as high-quality. Like a VCD or super-VCD, except using DVD media.
DVD video can be encoded at different compression ratios to trade time for quality. The simple recorder I have will record for or six hours on a single layer disk so the number of movies on that number of disks is quite possible. It’s all the same “format” in that it has the right number of scan lines and refresh rate for NTSC but detail will be less clear and there will be more noticable compression artifacts such as color banding.
The Sci-Fi one I’m looking at for exactly that type of thing–MST3k’ing them. As long as the quality is watchable that is good enough. And if they’re horrible movies, so much the better.
The cartoon one I was thinking my son might enjoy…
Living overseas has made DVD movies really important; and I miss those black and white movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. The value packs have been a real pleasure because we can watch those late weekend night movies that used to be played on “regular tv” way back before cable. Yeah, the quality isn’t the best but its fun to watch early Robert DeNiro or Jack Nickleson movies with my kids.
There is a series of $1 DVDs which tend to be those sci fi movies from 40 years back. Sets are ok; we have slasher movies, tough guy movies, sherlock holmes, aliens from outer space etc.
