DVD Player Connection help

Just a point to make, though it was briefly touched on:

You CANNOT attach your DVD player THROUGH your VCR, to the TV.

Each will have to be attached to your TV through a separate connector, which an RF Modulator will not achieve. Instead, you’ll also require an A/B Switch, which allows you to swap from one to the other as needed.

I think.

Andy_fl, I did what you said and it actually worked! However, the picture contract keeps going in and out from bright to dark

My VCR is over 10 years old (but still works GREAT), you think that’s why it’s doing that?

My TV has only an RF input which says ‘Antenna’ above it.

My VCR has Audio Video in and out inputs and RF in (from antenna) and RF out (to tv).

I looked on the web, is this what I need?:

I really appreciate everyone’s help with this!

Oh yeah,

PS - I don’t have cable TV.

PPS - When I say RF input, I hope I’m using the correct term, but it’s the round type of connection with the one needle-like prong in the middle.

That’s a coax cable. It’s what antenna wires are now a days.

LolaCocaCola, what is the type & model of dvd player that you have? That info would make it a lot
easier to let you know what to do.

Handy - It’s a Toshiba SD-2800

Lolo out of curiosity look on the front of your TV near the bottom left or right (or middle) and see if there are any flip down panels or jacks. The AV inputs on some TV’s are on the front hiden behind a little flip down panel to make connecting a video camera easier.

I’m pretty sure the picture going dark and light is Macrovision™ in action. Its something put on most(?) disks (and tapes) that messes up VCRs so you can’t tape them.

Brian

There are no hidden panels on my TV, but I just noticed two holes on the back of my TV which say F S next to them

I am getting ready to go to Radio Shack with my little diagram.

Lola, I Think yes its your VCR conking up - with the Macrovision thing (its to prevent you from copying DVDs to video tapes). I would’nt recommend the RF Modulator because it costs around $30 and you can get a new VCR from Walmart for around $50 and will serve you better. With the new VCR you can record your shows from the TV better too.

And yes you are right those wires are RF the prong thingy :d

Andy_fl, Damn! I just got back from Radio Shack with a brand spanking new RF Modulator in my hot lil’ paw. (The clerk said that’s what I needed after showing him my elaborate diagram :p))

My VCR has worked great (never a problem) - and we don’t have Walmart here.

Can I keep it, huh, can I?

Oh, and once again, thank you for all your help, everyone!

I couldn’t’ve ::sniff:: done it without ya.

Sorry to keep bumping this thread, but I just wanted to tell everyone I connected my DVD player with the RF Modulator and it works PERFECTLY!

YAY!!!

Great to know that Lola. Just a small suggestion - do not connect it like it is suggested in http://www.sanyo.com/consumer/electronics/tv_diagrams_tvdvd.html because then you will have to reconnect the wires every time you wanted to use your VCR (Not a good idea with such a OLD TV jacks).
Instead, connect the RF out (the prongy thingy) from the Modulator to the RF INPUT of the VCR ( where the antenna connected before ) and connect the RF OUT of the VCR to your TV. This way you’ll be able to run the DVD as well ass the VCR without disconnecting and reconnecting.

All the best.

Andy-fl, I was wondering about that! You read my mind! I was just thinking what a pain in the ass it’s gonna be to keep switching the cables when I wanted to use my VCR.

Thanks for the info.

You’re a STAR!!!

Hey, Andy - I just tried doing that, but it looks like I’m gonna have to buy another RF Out (prong thingy) cable. - I only have one, and one other one which leads from the antenna on top of my tv which is plugged into the ANT In plug at the back of my Modulator.

OK, (I know everyone must be getting sick of this thread, already) :stuck_out_tongue:

But I just wanted to say I went to the store and got another Coaxial cable, and hooked it up just like Andy said.

Now both my DVD and VCR players work!

I am sooooo happy

Good for you! Now pop some pop corn, put your newest movie in and enjoy!

Cool. Since this situation is resolved, I’ll close the thread.
