DVD Porn

This weekend, I watched my DVD of Flesh Gordon, then watched it again with the audio commentary, which was very interesting. This got me to wondering if porn movies on DVD have any extras. Do any of them include commentary tracts, perfomer bios, short subjects, double features etc? How about “classic” movies such as Deep Throat or Behind the Green Door or Debbie Does Dallas. I have not bought these types of movies because they are generally more expensive than I am willing to pay, however, if they had extras, like the DVDs from Something Wierd Video I might be willing to get some. Often I find the extras much more entertaining than the actual movies. So do any companies release these types of DVDs?

Surely I am not the only one who would be interested in this type of DVD? Although maybe I am, because on the rare occasion I get one of these videos I watch the plot and story and FF a good bit of the sex scenes.

I don’t understand it either.

I’ve got a copy of Digital Playground’s Forbidden Tales DVD. Tera Patrick is the star and there is a commentary track with her and one of the DP producers (a lady, her name escapes me), and it’s hilarious. Anybody who has ever seen Tera interviewed knows she is sharp and funny and it really comes through on this track. She looks incredible in the movie, also.

I’ve seen adult titles advertised as having mulitple camera angles.

A friend of mine once brought a vhs copy of some fiddling with the sex scenes of some dvd porn he’d rented. It had to be the oddest thing to be watching 'cause he had futzed with the angles and the closeup while copying it, and there’s one thing I know I never want to see the dvd version of again: anal sex. There’s something about a shot of someone being screwed in the butt that shouldn’t be seen at 20x the original size.

I can’t really link to a porn sales site so I’ll link to the IMDb.
Taboo has a “Special Collector’s Edition” which has both an audio commentary and an interview with Kay Parker.

Most DVDs also come with photo galleries.

Further research reveals “Deep Throat” has deleted scenes.

“Behind the Green Door” seems to have nothing special about it, not even a photo gallery. “Debbie Does Dallas” is the same with a photo gallery. “The Devil in Mrs. Jones” also seems to be lacking anything really extra.

More commentaries on “The Opening of Misty Bethoven” (1975), “Barbara Broadcast” (1977), “Insatiable” (1980), “Exhausted” (1981) and “The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann” (1975).

There’s something fascinating about the idea of porn commentaries.

  • That movie sounds very interesting.
** And “Marilyns kaleidoscope of both animated and still photos, found after 20 years”
*** Lost footage and an interview.

I’ve seen several Region 2 Euro DVD’s that have interesting extras.

A series of French DVD’s of the films of Brigette Lahaie, a very popular 70’s French porno star, have deleted scenes, interviews with the participants, trailers, still galleries, etc.

I’ve seen her in some softcore films (she was the blonde doing the nasty w/ Uma Thurman in Henry and June, for example…) and she’s quite the babe.

Oh, yeah, they have lots of extras. According to the adult reviews at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com), many DVDs have cast interviews and bios, behind the scenes shorts, outtakes, the dreaded “multiple angle” option, stills, trailers for other films, and (for people that watch DVDs on their PCs), games and links to websites.

Here are some examples:

The Sopornos 3–Audio Commentary with the director and star, 3 audio biographies, photogallery, virtual tour, all three Soporno trailers, 3 other VCA trailers, 11.5 minute Behind the Scenes featurette, chapters broken out by sex act and cast, CREDITS!

Heart Breaker–positions room (see the types of action you want to see), Briana biography, 2 scenes from other Vivid releases with Briana in them, photogallery, 12.5 minute bloopers/out take reel, 25.5 minute Behind the Scenes featurette, spam, CREDITS!

Love at First Byte–biographies in an interview format with Aurora Snow, Evan Stone, Mia Smiles, April, Keri Windsor, trailers for Blue Angel, Dripping Wet Sex 1, Naughty Bedtime Stories, photogalleries, bonus scenes from earlier Simon Wolf movies, an interview with Bud Lee, double sided dvd cover, bloopers, Behind the Scenes feature, CREDITS!

I don’t know quite what possessed me but I listened to most of the director’s commentary for “Ryker’s Revenge.” A lot of talk about the locations, having to film quickly because the owners of the house were returning and the light was being lost, and–more than once–“Anyone who says Ken Ryker doesn’t get hard during sex, take a look at that!” But there was also some actually interesting stuff about the director’s choices and, hand to God, a mini-rant about cinematographers setting up shots like they’re the director or something. The DVD also featured stills gallery and excerpts from the online diary of one of the stars talking about the making of the video. Based on that I decided to listen to the commentary for “Twins” which was fairly lame except for the story of the set’s catching on fire during filming and how they kept going. “See how high the fire is? It’s about to catch the set on fire. Look, it’s on fire.”

I just got the Wakefield Poole collection featuring three supposed “classics” of the gay porn genre: Boys in the Sand (a bona fide “classic,” even got reviewed in Variety); Boys in the Sand II and Bijou. The DVD includes commentary, an interview with two “godfathers of porn,” Wakefield Poole and another guy I never heard of, along with some hardcore shorts, photo galleries and, interestingly, a movie Poole shot for Andy Warhol’s first showing at (IIRC) the Whitney and in honor of Andy’s birthday. Haven’t ventured into the extras yet but I’m intrigued by the interview and the Warhol short.
