I have an LCD monitor with DVI input. Can I use this as a TV (sound through hi-fi) using my (soon to arrive) DVD/HD recorder with HDMI output? The big new TV set is not due to arrive for a couple of weeks and the old CRT one is broke

Maybe. It depends on whether the DVD/HDTV recorder’s HDMI output encrypts the HD content and expects an HDCP-compliant device at the other end of the HDMI cable to decrypt it. If you are playing non-HD content, you should be okay.
