Not a done deal, but based on the San Andreas opening, I’d guess they’ll make it happen. I wonder what ol’ Jack Burton will have to say about that?

Who?
Jack Burton. Me.
Ridiculous. BTILC is perfect as is, needs no prequel, sequel or remake. Son of a bitch must pay.
He paid his dues. The check is in the mail.
Amen.
“What the hell!?! HOOOOONNNKK”
Well I agree this movie does not need to be remade, I do like “The Rock”. He was great in “The Rundown”.
MtM
No pathetic excuses! Find them! Boil them until their flesh falls off. You heard me!
Aye, add me to the chorus. BTILC is, like Escape From New York already utterly perfect.
I’ll have to find a way to get in touch with Mr. Carpenter and have a talk with him about this.
ETA: AAAAAAAAGHHHH! I see from the linked article that Fox has the rights to the story. We’re doomed! DOOMED! Don’t look at the light!
Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we’re not back by dawn… call the president.
I agree, and usually it would annoy me that they’d do something like this, but maybe since Big Trouble wasn’t a hit, I don’t feel like it’s a cash grab so I’m sort of okay with them giving it a go. Maybe it will bring more attention to the original movie.
If they can bring in Robert Rodriguez and tell him to work his Machete Kills-mojo on it, I’d actually look forward to seeing what they came up with.
Alternately, Edgar Wright could possibly do something fun with it.
I don’t understand why Hollywood insists on remaking movies that never made any money to begin with, but are cult classics.
Rock is too big and beefy for the role.
I guess my bigger question would be: Who plays Wang and Egg Shen?
James Hong is still around, and even appeared in the Lo Pan Style video. He could reprise the role just fine.
This is gonna take crackerjack timing Wang.
On the serious side - I think Johnson is a terrible choice to play ol’ Jack Burton. The whole point of Jack was that he was a lousy action hero, up until the point he killed Lo Pan. He spends almost the entire movie confused and acting tough, but not really doing much of anything doing anything useful - is the Rock really going to be able, and willing, to pull off that kind of a role?
The Rock let himself get beaten up by Steve Carrell in the Get Smart movie. After that, being ineffectual against Chinese storm demons is probably not that big a deal.
Exactly! Are there no new ideas in Hollywood at all? I’d be less opposed to a sequel with Johnson playing a new character, you could even have Kurt Russell in it, than have The Rock play Jack Burton.
I know. The movie works because Wang is the hero, and Jack is the comic relief. Will Dwayne Johnson make that work? I kind of doubt it.
If only Patrick Warburton were 20 years younger …
I wouldn’t even be “less opposed”, I’d be fairly enthusiastic about the idea, particularly if Robert Rodriguez directed it, as suggested above.
Maybe they should get Zach Braff to play Jack.
Nooooo… This was a family favorite when my sons were young. They darn near wore out the VHS tape they watched it so often.
Why can’t they just revive the characters and make it a sequel? I’m bummed.
I am less worried about Dwayne Johnson’s ability to play a character who thinks he the hero (but he’s not. He’s just not.) I’m more worried about the producers not getting that Wang Chi is actually the hero, and ol’ Jack Burton is the sidekick.
