Dynamic pricing in baseball

…is coming to a team near you. The San Francisco Giants are the first to institute it this year. Some teams already price rivalry games and interleague games against popular teams higher, but dynamic pricing is something else altogether. Dynamic pricing means that ticket prices can fluctuate on a daily basis, based upon demand, pitching matchups, team standing, and even weather forecasts.

Want to see the Giants/Dodgers on a late spring weekend? The Friday night forecast is for fog and drizzle, but Saturday afternoon looks to be warm and sunny. You might have to pay 50% more for Saturday tickets. Watching a visiting Royals team might be a cheap date, but if Zach Grienke is on the hill, expect to pay a premium.

I’m not sure what to think of it. It makes sense economically, and it might take the ticket brokers out of the occasion, but on the other hand it seems to kill the sponteneity of going to a game as a last minute decision on a sunny weekend day with the family.
