E-cig (electronic cigarette) opinions, experiences, recommendations

That tears it. I’m never going anywhere near one of these things.

Just posting to subscribe. This sounds fascinating.

I’ve seen these too and wondered about them. How much does the thing weigh? Is is like sticking a cigarette in your mouth, or is it like trying to lip a AA battery? Do you get the “heat hit” in the back of your throat like you do with cigarettes?

Can you get the atomizers & batteries stateside, or do I have to get them from Hong Kong?

I’m not sure of the exact weight, but it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of a AAA battery, though longer and thinner, and not terribly difficult to hold in your mouth with just your lips. If you hit it too hard, it kinda tickles the back of your throat and makes you cough.

You can get them in the U.S. Check the Vaporstix link I posted earlier. That guy’s in Michigan, and so far in my experience, he always ships out the same day the order is placed.

Does this thread make anyone else think of those bulbous cigarette-things in the Watchmen comic book?

I guess I’ve got Watchmen on the brain these days. Never mind. [/hijack]

is this completely illegal now?

Why? My local tobacco shop started selling them after I mentioned it to them. They’re still selling them.

Mine too.

How did your China experience go for you, by the way?

Oh, it worked out fine, thanks.

I ordered it online, paid via paypal, and at the time I ordered they were including free shipping, so it was only the $28. They gave me replacements for everything, so it was kind of like getting two. The picture makes it cigarette-colored, but mine came in black. Also, the little LED or whatever at the end is supposed to light up orange, but mine lights up blue. That doesn’t really bother me. Kinda cool, in a way. Maybe there was a color choice box on the website I missed. It might look cool in a club, if I went to clubs. The shipping time was pretty quick, well within their promised shipping time of within 14 days.

Anyhoo, I don’t use it. :frowning: It has a pleasant, kind of sweet taste, but the vapor just doesn’t have any “smoking” sensation. It’s like when you go outside on a cold day and exhale some steam vapor. Imagine inhaling that vapor back. Just no sensation of anything bad going into your lungs which unfortunately, is a satisfying part of my addiction. Someone with more virgin lungs than I have might find the vapor strong enough. It’s heavier than a cigarette, and maybe a smidge more than a pen, but comfortable hand feel.

I’d totally take one with me if I were going to be trapped on a plane for hours; it could be a real nerve-saver and I like that it fits in the hand like a cigarette. It’s better than nicotine patches or gum that way.

Can’t say how long the battery or juice refills last, because I didn’t use it that long. It did seem to work just fine while I was trying it though, and I’ll keep it around in case of emergency. I don’t regret trying it for $28. I think my tobacco shop is hawking them for around two-three times that. I’ll have to check next time.

Specifically,
I have heard that e-cig packages coming from China are being seized at customs. Meaning if you order from China, you may never receive your purchase…

Many of the links that were presented in the beginning of this thread do not work anymore… and many e-cig links I follow on other sites are not working. Clearly a lot of suppliers have folded…

article http://www.usnews.com/blogs/risky-business/2009/04/16/possible-e-cigarette-ban.html

It seems there are still many ways to get e cigs and accessories through US suppliers though…
Of course this is all BS to protect the cigarette industry.

I bought one from China last week and got it Monday. I’m on my 2nd day and I’ve only had 2 real cigarettes today, down from 10. I have quit multiple times for long periods, and I’ve always loved to smoke, but not the smell or ill effects on health.

Anyway, I got the JoyE 510. The cartridges that it came with are decent, at first they taste a bit sweet. You do get that “throat feel” from the drags.

I bought a manual one (you press a button instead of it automatically firing) on the recommendation of the e-cigarette forum mentioned earlier in the thread. I also bought empty cartridges and ordered fluid separately.

So far, I smoked it in the (empty) doctor’s waiting room, my house all day (with nonsmoking roommate, who noticed nothing), and in various store aisles with no complaints. I’d say it’s all about discretion.

By colleague has one. Swears but it…helped him cut down significantly but he still smokes the real thing several times per day.

I have to laugh at it, though - its got a USB charger, and the LED “coal light” glows when he plugs it into his computer.

One of my friends picked one up from China last week. When he would exhale there would still be what appeared to be smoke, of some sort. It didn’t smell like shit though. :stuck_out_tongue:

A drawback is that this stupid city we live doesn’t sell any refills for his specific brand. So it’s back to eBay, which will become a huge pain in the ass eventually.

I’ve been seeing them lately for sale at malls around Atlanta. Definitely at Lenox, and I think at North Point as well. I haven’t paid attention to the brand name and have no idea how much they cost, but I’ll stop by and ask for the benefit of the conversation next time I spot one.

Zombie thread, I know, but I saw this in the news:

E-Cigarettes Pose a Health Hazard, FDA Warns

Thanks for the heads-up. I can now pass this information that I’d normally not ever have come up upon to my friend who is sucking his e-cig down like there is no tomorrow.

The reason cited “…that it could lead to young people smoking actual cigarettes…” seems pretty bogus compared to inhaling chemicals other than nicotine with harmful health effects. Or this could be just another case of the FDA being used to clear the market before a huge corporation introduces their version.

No, just water vapour.
