Edward Gorey died 4/15. Heart attack. He was 75. Why did I only find this out from a squip in Entertainment Weekly?!
It was in my local paper the day after. Go figure–usually anything not NRA or Christian Coalition related waits 'til a slow news day like a Tuesday. I have been too upset to post about it. I love Edward Gorey. I’m glad I have several things by him to share with my kids when I have them.

OMG! I didn’t know. I’m sad now.
That’s it, i’m going to bed.
Life Before Death. Why wait?
I guess you missed “All Things Considered” last week. Linda W. and Noah A. read all of “The Gashlycrumb Tinies.” I was in hysterics.
I’ll never forget my old high-school chum Chuck for turning me on to the works of Gorey. Chuck had an awesome collection of all his small books, plus “Amphigorey” 1 and 2.

He had a large (1/2-page) obit in the NY Times last week.
I loved him, and think it fitting somehow that he died so close to Charles Schulz, as he was really the Anti-Charles Schulz. Whenever I knew a child of just-reading age (not often!), I’d get them “The Gashleycrumb Tinies,” Gorey’s famous ABCs. If I am not mistaken, Ukelele Ike taught his children, Little Banjo and Little Pianola, to read via Edward Gorey.
I got my older brother a copy of the Gashleycrumb Tinies this past Christmas because he used to have a poster of it.
When I’m a teacher, I plan to put up the little tots for the alphabet in my classroom.
sniff
Now I’m just depressed.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good dipped in chocolate.
Guy, thank you so much for posting that “Gashleycrumb” link! I have been printing them out and replacing the names with those of my co-workers, and giving it to them as name plates. They are all delighted!

This is the first I’d head about him dying, I’m sorry to hear about this.
I saw the guy years ago at a book signing at Harvard Books in NY, He was just as eccentric as you might suspect. Came in wearing a big furry coat, wild beard, had to be over six foot. Looking at him you wouldn’t think him capable of such delicate penwork.
Thanks indeed for the link. Ever since I heard he passed away I have had those drawings in particular on my mind and had intended to find the book at the library this week. How nice not to have to wait.

A sad day indeed. For those of you interested in the master’s work, you can still easily find paperback editions of Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too, Amphigorey Also.
One of my favourites is “The Curious Sofa, A Pornographic work by Ogdred Weary”.
Oh, no. This is truly a day of mourning. Sigh… My sister is a huge fan of his. I don’t think she knows yet. She’ll be devastated…

Here lies Pierre de Fermat. Unfortunately, there is not enough room on this tombstone for a proper epitaph.
My daughter is memorizing “The Wuggly Ump” for school.
It eats umbrellas, gunny sacks, brass doorknobs, mud, and carpet tacks.
We were very saddened.
