Early Heart appreciation thread

Okay, fans of early Heart (limited to all albums pre-Heart, confusingly enough.)

– What’s your favorite early Heart album?
– Favorite early Heart song?
– any random comments?

me:
– Dreamboat Annie, by far.
– Sylvan Song/Dream of the Archer. A song I like due to its sheer weirdness.
– You know who would do a good cover of “White Lightning and Wine?” The Donnas. The music would do well punkified, and the theme fits the Donnas music, although of course the singing wouldnt be as good.

In April of 1976, my father bought a sky blue 1968 Ford Custom 4-door from one of his aunts. (It became my first car a few months later when I turned 16.) A few days later, Dad took me and one of my brothers on a road trip to Roanoke, Virginia to visit some other of his relatives.

Driving up 220 North, I remember hearing on the car radio the full album version of “Crazy On You” that day for the first time. My brother and I flipped out. On the way home, we heard some more from Dreamboat Annie believe it or not, since this was AM radio. I think Dad actually let us stop at the “Record Bar” once we got back to town, scrape up $4 and change and run in to buy our own copy. I have never forgotten that gorgeous spring day, the flowering trees, the sky that matched the color of our new ride, and hearing the sisters Wilson for the first time.

Nice little memory, but I don’t recall mentioning it to anyone for a very long time. One day last spring, however, this brother came to visit me on a day like that one long ago. As he walked to the front door were I was waiting to let him in, he said, “this reminds me of the day we drove up to Roanoke with Dad and heard ‘Crazy On You’ for the first time. Remember?”

I’ve had a warm feeling for Ann and Nancy and their wonderful music ever since.
