It’s been four months since I’ve seen Hallboy. The last time was for a four day weekend when all of my kids and their families got together in San Antonio for Hallboy’s graduation from the USAF Basic Military Training. (Here’s the scoop on that journey.)
That was four months ago, and I’ve missed him terribly. We’d talked about his coming home for leave after his training at tech school, but we both knew it would be pretty expensive, so I was pretty much set for him not coming home and him going directly to his new base.
This morning at 4:13 am, my phone rang. It was Hallboy.
“Mom, I love you,” he said, his voice cracking. I told him I loved him, too.
“Can you come open the back door?” he asked.
Yes, he was at my back door. He’d flown in overnight and Hallgirl1 had picked him up at the airport and brought him home. He’s on leave for the next two weeks, until he has to report to his new base.
Apparently he’d gotten his order the day after he graduated last week, and when I texted him yesterday evening asking him he’d heard anything YET about his orders (and he replied that he’d tell me when he received them), he was at the airport waiting to board his flight.
He’d told me last week that he’d finished making my Mother’s Day present (which I knew he was working on) and that although it would be late, I should get it about Tuesday.
Guess it was right on time after all.
