Earthquake/disaster help from other counties

I suspect it may be that it is not reported, but in the stories I have read about the earthquakes in Haiti and now Chile, it seems as though the U.S. is the only nation sending money, food and personnel to help.

What about the rest of Central and South America? Why are none of them helping, or do they?

I’d love to know whether Cuba or Venezuela ever do a thing, for exampe, or other more prosperous countries like Brazil and Argentina.

Or, for that matter, the Columbian and Mexican drug cartels.

I would think it’s just that the US media is only interested in US relief efforts.

Go to Google News and punch in “haiti relief canada” or “chile relief canada” and you’ll get plenty of hits about aid to those two countries from the government and private charities.

In fact, HMCS Halifax just came back from six weeks of providing relief work in Haiti.

Ahhh that America centric view of the world. Why do you assume such things? In Guadalajara (México FYI) just about every business I have been in these past few weeks there are signs giving information on how to donate funds for Haiti. And this is true for the rest of the country. Now we are seeing TV ads for the same for Chile.

This photo montage (warning, pictures are a bit gory) has pictures of American, Venezualan, Taiwanese and British rescue teams assembling within 48 hours of the quake. I’ve also heard of Mexican, Chinese, Iceland Qatar and Israel sending teams, and I’m sure many other countries did so as well.

It HAS been reported, even in the U.S. press. You just haven’t been paying attention. I’ve seen at least one article about an Israeli team helping in Haiti, for example.

A list by country from Wikipedia: Humanitarian response by national governments to the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Good link:

So that covers every country in the region, every country in the Americans, virtually every country in the OECD and a lot more besides.
So KlondikeGeoff, please pass this on, as I’m sure others in your circle of friends are under similar dillusions.

Peru send 100 doctors to Haiti aside from keepimg in the 200 blue helmetys we had.
The president and health minister went to Chile (the minister stayed) with three planes full of aid - including a “portable hospital”.
Sorry dude, fail.

In fact, I’ve heard that the amount of money that some other countries have donated to Haitian relief is larger (as a percentage of their Gross National Product), than the amount that the U.S. has donated.

I would LOVE to get a credible site for that…

The Cubans specifically have a reputation for their emergency relief teams: they’re already used to working in bad conditions, you see.

The UK is full of ads for Haiti relief, Chile is starting to pop up as well, although with less sense of urgency due to the differences between the two countries.

Because America is the World Police, and with great power comes great responsibility…

tschild’s cite has that, assuming Wikipedia’s numbers are accurate. It has the US promising an aid package of $US379million in total, and Brazil with $US210million. Brazil’s GDP is about 1/7 of America’s.

I’m sure there are other good examples too, that was just the first one that jumped out at me.

So, again assuming that the Wikipedia entry is correct, Brazil is contributing almost 5 times as much as the U.S., when considered as a proportion of its GNP.

Just thinking of Non-Governmental aid, the British Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Haiti had rasied GBP50 million by 26 January (call it USD 75 million). You can see a list of what the various charities are doing with the money here.

Despite not being a national government, Fairfax County, Virginia, is on that list. Our county maintains an organization of emergency response personnel that is sent to international crises. Apparently the Federal government pays for the deployment when this "Urban Search and Rescue Virginia Task Force 1 " is officially “activated;” I’m not sure how much of their activity at other times is paid for by the county itself. Fairfax is one of the richest counties in the United States so I guess we can afford it.

According to a press release, they just got back from Haiti last month:

I think it’s amusing that when there are crises in other countries, assistance comes from superpowers, nation-states, the UN, and my county.
