It’s been slightly warm in San Francisco and Daly City the last couple of days. THREE separate people have referenced the “heat” (80 degrees isn’t heat, sorry :rolleyes:) and said it felt like “earthquake weather.” The hell?? Never heard the term before. I’m sure that there’s no causal correlation between weather and earthquakes (right?), but has anyone else heard this before? If so, where do you live?

I’m down near Santa Cruz and we’ve had the notion of earthquake weather ever since Loma Prieta. It was a weirdly still, warm and almost humid day so now every day like that in October and November brings out those comments as though there are never earthquakes in other kinds of weather. It’s probably the same up there.
I can’t believe you’ve never heard of “earthquake weather”. You must not be native to California. It’s a load of bull, but I’ve heard the myth that warm weather=earthquakes my whole life. Of course, it makes no sense.
There is no such thing I agree. But the term has been around since the 50’s. The Ranch house was 5 miles from the San Andreas. I now live in San Jose.
Nope, from New Jersey. Lived in SF from 1996-2002, moved to the Central Valley, and have been back in SF since late 2007.

When I lived in California, I would hear people say this often.
I once said it was stupid and a friend of mine said, “Well, it is always warm when an earthquake hits here.”
“Uh, we are in California - it is always pretty warm here.”
“Yeah, but it is a different kind of warm…sort of like from the ground up.”
And there might be something to it. Here is a Google search with quite a few entries.
