Ease up on the ads, please?

I didn’t miss your point. I simply disagreed.
(And that’s assuming I use adblocker specifically because of the SDMB. I think you should use it whether you’re a subscriber or not)

My point is that the SDMB is worth supporting on it’s own merit, regardless of ads.

If you disagree, then why do you spend so much time here?

If someone reports a problem with a particular ad we can forward the info up the chain of command. Other than that, we have no influence at all over the ads here.

Use chrome and it will solve half the problem. Pay for a membership will solve the second half .

Thanks for the answer.

Me too. The ad blocker is useful on lots of sites - although occasionally someone here will link to a site that won’t allow me to proceed unless I turn off my ad blocker, which is a good reason (as far as I’m concerned) to avoid that site anyway. And IE with ad blocker works just fine for me.

One factor to consider is the effect of the ads on newcomers to the site. People who only recently started visiting and haven’t yet decided on hanging around and possibly paying out.

The people up the chain need to understand how certain types of ads as well as the number drive off such people.

Ghostery is great no matter which browser you use. I thought I would visit salon.com since it is not a site I normally go to.

There are 25 tracking cookies on Salon. Twenty fucking five! They are least part of the problem. Turn them off.

This is an excellent point.

But, wait!

Do we want newcomers?

I posted a thread about the content of the ads two years ago and the collective response was “meh.”

I’m still of the opinion that the ads we run make the Dope look like a pretty hackey site, but the specific content of them is probably meaningless at this point since they’re so ubiquitous right now. They’re the equivalent of seeing a car plastered in a bunch of hyper-political bumper stickers. You don’t need to read the individual stickers to get an idea of the overall nature of the guy who decided to stick them up there.

I used to be a paying member. It’s because of the ads that I don’t pay the goddamned fifteen bucks. It’s because they went all, “give us money or we’re gonna force ads on you” that I went, “hello adblocker”.

As far as using IE goes, many of us may be browsing from work or some other setting where we have no influence over the browser that we are able to use.

Are you aware that the OP doesn’t quite make 6,000 posts a year? With that sort of light usage of the board, he may never see the return on a $15 annual contribution.

It’s entirely possible that whatever is wrong with hid browser was installed by a malicious ad, either here or elsewhere. The internet without adblock is lot like a car without seatbelts. A lot of people might be okay, never have a problem, but someone’s gonna really regret it in the long run. Why take the chance that the someone will be you?

I tried using Firefox to browse Salon, but it didn’t help.

Are there any adblockers you recommend?

I use Firefox and Chrome with:
[ul]
[li]Adblock Plus - available for FF, Chrome and Android[/li][li] Privacy Badger - available for FF, Chrome[/li][/ul]
Salon works just fine for me in FF and Chrome, using the two addons listed above.

Adblock Plus is also available for IE, Opera, and Safari.

I personally use Adblock Plus as well as NoScript. A script blocker like NoScript will break a lot of web sites, but you can add exceptions to get the things that you need to work.

I second this; it’s what I have on Firefox.

BTW, there seems to be something wrong with the display-formatting or something – the Pit-threads page now begins with:

And, the buttons surrounding the posting-box – the smiley-buttons, the quote-box button, etc. – are not working; I click them and nothing happens. That has been happening on and off for the past few days.
