East Coast Dopers HELP!!!

On Friday I start a four day weekend! YAY! I have convinced my BF to take a couple days off of work and take me away. We have talked about going to Williamsburg, but I have already been there. I have lived in VA for about 3 years and have not seen much of the east coast. (I grew up in CO.) So, I am looking for some suggestions of places we could go spend a couple of days. Something within 4-5 hours of Northern VA would be perfect.

Please someone help me!

I think I just posted this in the wrong spot, if I did please feel free to move it.
Thanks

You can’t get far on the East Coast in four to five hours. I would have suggested Charleston, but that is probably a 9 to 10 hour drive for you. The Outer Banks of NC are extremely nice, plenty to do, lots of historical sites, and probably lots of tourists, but it’s worth the trip.

Kitty Hawk, the light houses, fishing, beaches…
I too recommend the Outer Banks.

Thank Ultress and ChiefScott! I will have to mention the Outer Banks to my BF.
As soon as I take a full vacation, where I don’t fly home to visit the family in CO, I will be able to go places that are further away, like Charleston.
I would love more suggestions. I think giving the BF plenty of choices will help my chances of getting somewhere I haven’t been.

you can go to the mountains of West Virginia…beautiful country.

From northern VA, the eastern shore of MD or Delaware beaches are beautiful. WHen I lived there, I would look at the map, pick a small town at the tip of a penninsual and head there. You ususally found charming little towns, anriquing and great B and B’s.

Ohh, that sounds neat. Both of us are very adventurous!

Geez, don’t have to leave Virginia for sightseeing…
Luray Caverns…Natural Bridge…Skyline Drive…Jamestown…Mount Vernon…Monticello…There’s a few days’ worth of stuff to do in Richmond even though I never both doing any of it. Edgar Allan Poe museum…Virginia Museum…Science Museum…Valentine House…Canal Walk…Maymont Park…

If you decide on the Outer Banks, e-mail me. My sister works for a realty company that handles vacation rentals there. I’ll give you her 800 number.

Asseteague Islad…god I know I spelled that wrong…

Depends on what you like, and just how far you’ll stretch the drive.

NYC is an adult playground - lots of great things to see and do, second only to Boston (does my parochialism show?), but decidedly not the fun-in-the-sun type getaway, and lodging can be pricey.

I second (third?) the Outer Banks idea, if you like the beach/ocean thing. Kitty Hawk is a great spot - good beaching…sunset on Jockey Ridge…try your hand at hang gliding on the dunes, windsurfing in the sound…

Mtns of WV also a good idea. Whitewater rafting may be a possibility (New River and the Gaulley), although I’ve only done it in the fall when they dam-release water - don’t know what the water level is like there now, although we’ve had a lot of rain last few weeks in NC. It may be worth a call to one of the many rafting outfits.

Have fun
