I had been thinking of moving east for over a year now. I’d had it in my mind the area I wanted: south of Ohio to be warmer, but not too far south.
I really have Virginia in mind.
We’re just putting out feelers here.
Who all of you dopers are over there, and where are the good, yet inexpensive neighborhoods?
Thank you.
ChiefScott checking in.
Reasonable-priced housing can still be found in Va. Beach. Also the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk is “Yuppy” nice.
Move to North Carolina. You would love it.
You’re asking about “good, inexpensive neighborhoods” on THE EAST COAST?
Ummmmmmmmmm…I’d say anywhere, outside of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, or Miami. That should give you a fairly wide latitude.
Hmmm…lemme get back to you. Silver Spring, Maryland (where I live) isn’t too bad. However, not too bad to me is $900 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment.
Woo…inaugural post. Go me.
I live outside Philadelphia in a wee hamlet entitled “Mullica Hill”. It’s fairly small and backwoods right now (the backwoods part judged solely by the complete and total lack of affordable broadband, unless you want to get bent over and reamed by a certain nameless telephone company), but it’s the fastest-growing township in the state. Maybe we’ll get cable modems. And cheap DSL. From providers other than Hell Atlantic. Someday.
Housing developments galore here, though. There’s a big mother of a development going up right across the street…half the houses are either done or under construction already, and they just started about a year ago. Wheee.
It’s a nice town, though. Lots of historical stuff (read: antique shops) if that sort of stuff turns your crank. This town also has the dubious distinction of being founded by some Finnish guy and also sharing its name with a town in Finland. The title of the Finnish town undoubtedly works out to something like “Yhgäälasetölatakuntamuus” after translation, though, and I don’t speak Finnish, so I can neither confirm nor deny this.
If you live here, I hope you like old furniture.
I’d say either NC or VA. Both very nice places.
Va. Beach girl here. Come on down…

Define “good.” Define “inexpensive.”
Good = Can walk the streets at night without the all-encompassing fear of being accosted by rapists, muggers, crackheads, or panhandlers.
Inexpensive = Most military families stationed here can aford to live here.
You want to move closer to Silo…on purpose??? (;))
I know Virginia pretty well - grew up in N.Va., lived and worked in Newport News (Tidewater) and Bristol (far SW), as well as having attended both UVa and Va. Tech. Gone hiking and caving in the mountains in the western part of the state - Highland, Bath, etc. counties.
It all depends on what you want and need. If your job isn’t dependent on a location, and you’d like a cheap place to live in beautiful mountains, Highland County is great. If you’re a techie and want to make a few bucks, you might want to be within commuting distance of the Tysons-Dulles corridor. If you want to greet the ships when they come in, Norfolk-Va.Beach is the place.
There are lots of wonderful places to live in Virginia, but it really depends on what you’re looking for.
