Easter Songs

What’s that one that goes “I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet”?

That’s part of the lyrics to the Irving Berlin song “Easter Parade” already mentioned by the OP.

Really? I always thought those were two different songs!

Maybe there’s another song somewhere with the line “I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet”, but I imagine Berlin could have sued the author for copyright infringement, since that’s his line:

It seems to me that this was a new one when I went to Catholic school back in the late 60s:
Easter Song

  1. My Lord, He died for a kingdom
To redeem the hearts of men.
Now my people don’t you weep
He has risen from His sleep,
    He lives again, Alleluia!

Chorus
Sing Alleluia! The Lord is risen.
He is risen indeed, Alleluia!

  1. My Lord came forth like the morning
With the splendor of the sun,
    Came triumphant from the womb,
From the darkness of the tomb,
    The vict’ry won, Alleluia!

  2. My Lord united our mountains
    With the everlasting hills,
Now the seasons and the seas
    Sing a song of victory,
    The rocks and rills, Alleluia!

  3. My Lord renewed all creation
That has waited late and long,
Now we all with one accord
Live and love the risen Lord,
    This is our song, Alleluia!

Happy Good Friday!

At the ‘Veneration Of The Cross’ we always sing for many choruses “Behold the wood of the Cross, On it lies our salvation”. It is very moving to go up and kiss the wooden cross. Other songs I hear at easter are :

  1. Whom shall I send
  2. Lord Of The dance
  3. Oh Come let us Adore him
  4. Worthy is the lamb
  5. Blessed are you
  6. Here I am Lord

Each year I aways go to “the Stations Of The Cross, according to Mary”. It is put on by the youth group and it is amazing.

My Favorite Easter song is “Mary Did You Know”. It just hits me in the heart that Mary had to stand by and watch her son be crucified because it had to be… For Us.

Mary Did You Know

I’m firmly agnostic but Keith Green’s Easter Song mentioned above is a great song. Another good one is Was It A Morning Like This?

I got to meet Keith Green when I was a kid living in the ministry and he was a great guy and incredible musician. He sang alongside Amy Grant in a friends’ folks living room.

See here for a wide selection of hymns (#174-213 are Easter hymns). Come Ye Faithful is particularly rich, tying together the themes of joy, springtime, Passover, and rebirth. Come Away to the Skies is an example of the beautiful old Southern hymnody. The Srife Is O’er is interesting, managing to be joyful in minor key, almost bittersweet in its tone.

I’m glad Intergalactic Gladiator picked up on “Lord of the Dance.”

This is one that some former housemates used to play. I like the harmonies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaXgtc-Cyrk

Just a few that we sing at our church: Our God Reigns, Worthy Is The Lamb That Was Slain, He Is Exalted. We use 2 hymn books, the 1982 Hymnal (Episcopal) & Spirit and Song (Oregon Chatholic Press)

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hopping down the bunny trail…
Hippity hoppity Easter’s on it way.

Friggin’ earworms! These are some of the lyrics that have surfaced in my brain over the last few hours:

My daddy bought a bunny
I take him out to play
But the gift that Mommy gave me
Just keeps on sleepin’ all day

My bunny eats his carrots
His fur is smooth as silk
But Mommy’s little present
Won’t touch a thing but milk

I got two Easter presents
Both have eyes of blue
One of them is my bunny
And the other’s my sister Sue!

A gentle reminder, people: if you’re quoting lyrics, please use about one verse or less, and link to another web site for the rest.

There’s also Easter Theatre by XTC

Huh. I totally did that, but I included the chorus in my original post, which was always my favorite part.

Oh well.
