Easy Chair/Recliner for the small in stature

My mom is 5’1" and has had 3 spine surgeries to fix nerve pain in her legs. She needs a new easy chair for the living room. The old one that my 6’ dad sat in is not comfortable for her - not only is it just old and worn out, it’s just not built for someone so short. Pillows and cushions can only do so much.

She keeps finding chairs she thinks she likes online, but they get bad reviews, especially from short people. I really want her to go to the store and try chairs but that is impossible right now as her mobility is near zero.

In the month she’s been home from the hospital she’s been going between laying in bed and sitting in a high-back dining room chair with arms, fitted with a seat pad and a pillow behind her. It works for being comfortable but it’s no easy chair.

I figure there’s got to be some shorter folks here with a chair they like, or who have a loved one who has a chair they like.

Any recommendations? Price isn’t really a concern - I will convince her that her comfort is worth it.

I would go to a medical supply store. They can tell you what measurements to get, and show you chairs that would fit. I frequent such a store ( in this case Carelinc). And just on their sale floor they have a pretty wide variety of chairs. These are lift recliners so there is that, but you can choose colors, fabrics etc. They’re not cheap, but you’d get the exact size.

I was just yesterday sitting in a bedside hospital chair in a surgical outpatient recovery room. I was waiting on my spouse who had op surgery getting ready to go home.

The chair was cushioned comfortable and it reclined easily using flippers in the arm rests. A full recliner. Medical grade equipment.

That would be amazing but cost? Idk How to order one or make sure it’s fits gotta be retailers near major hospitals systems ?

Hmmm…her good friend’s son works for procurement for the Cleveland Clinic…maybe he might have some leads!

Agree. An assist chair that rises up and forward might be something to ask about.

She actually doesn’t have too much of a problem getting up (or rather, should not have too much of a problem once her latest surgery heals) it’s more of a size thing. Sitting with your legs dangling, or having a headrest hitting the top of your head is no fun.

But, I did find some info on lift chairs, and they do make them in different sizes. I found a medical supply place not too far away, so maybe I can convince her to go get “fitted.”

Still open to regular retail suggestions tho! Thanks all!

I got a reclining lift chair from a medical supply store after one of my surgeries. I knew they made them in small sizes because my wife and I shopped for one for her mother. I never needed the full lift part but I can hit the Up button and adjust the chair so I can get off it.

If your mother insists upon a chair that will allow her feet to touch the floor, you’re probably going to have do some searching.

The La-Z-Boy website has recliners for those under 5’3" tall, so you might look there as well as a medical supply store. I think they have bricks-and-mortar stores.

My mother has a Stressless chair which comes in sizes. She’s under 5’ now and has C2-C7 fused, so similar to your mom.
