I shouldn’t have to. I’m the consumer. You know, the one with the money.
A fool and her money are soon parted. Have fun refusing to obey the laws of thermodynamics and frying your battery on your FUPA.
My point is, the people who make these things have calculated the time for which they can offer a warranty at a given price-point while remaining competitive.
Obviously your average laptop will last more than 12 months. But if the thing breaks after 12 months and one day, I can’t fault the manufacturer for not wanting to fix it for free. You’ve gotten exactly what you paid for. If they do decide to fix it just be to nice (and there is certainly some value to be had in being nice) then that’s a bonus. But it shouldn’t be expected.
Hey shit for brains. Go away. No one gives a flying fuck about your interpretation of battery life and expected use. That’s not even slightly related to the topic at hand. When my battery goes belly up I’ll be sure to look you up and piss up your leg.
And Sony, naturally, doesn’t follow through on their promised callback. Big fucking shock. Don’t buy Sony. Ever.
Hey, dumbfuck, that’s sarcasm, or irony, take your pick. Geez…some people.

Hi, gogoud. Welcome to the Straight Dope. While I appreciate that your product is directly related to the issues the OP is experiencing (and I particularly appreciate that you’re an actual person, and not a spambot) we do have rules against using the boards as advertising for private businesses or products. We do have a forum specifically for that sort of thing - The Marketplace - but you have to pay for a board membership in order to use it.
I encourage you to take a look around the rest of the boards. We’ve got a pretty nice community going here, with a lot to recommend it. I hope you decide to stick around.

It works for me.
That’s true. My advice to the OP is to buy a new laptop that is not made by Sony.
Seriously. Shit breaks. If it breaks too early, then stop buying from that company.
Did the OP insinuate he was going to buy another Sony product?
I dunno. He wants to stick with his Sony product. shrug He wants them to fix a product that’s already broken far too early. It’ll break again. I’d write it off and move on.
Am I the only one who usually plugs my laptop in? I also use a lap desk as well.
“LapTug”. Heh, heh, heh.
Might make more money by selling that URL…
I’ll let you know when my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S3112 breaks down. I’m going on about 5 years now, IIRC.
ETA: Buy Toshiba.
Of course not. His problem is that he can’t plug his laptop in anymore because the plug inside the machine is broken. Did you even read the thread?
If this is anything like a similar issue I had with a Dell laptop, you’re about the be doubly fucked. With mine, there’s some part of the power connection that’s integrated onto the motherboard and fails very frequently. When it goes, you need to replace the whole mobo. The $200 quote from Sony is probably just for standard repairs–if they need to give you a new mobo, it will probably be hundreds more. Before you ship the laptop to them, I’d definitely recommend clarifying what’s included in that price and how much it will cost for various parts (especially a new motherboard).
You should probably also check around for local computer repair shops, who can probably do repairs much more cheaply, and without the extra shipping wait time.
I love Sony Vaio laptops so much that I got two. The VPCF1 with the solid state hard drive. Freaking awesome. It’s the aircraft carrier of laptops. Smaller laptops routinely take off and land from the flight deck of this baby.
However their Sony Style stores are absolutely worthless. I wanted to test drive a netbook that was on display but their wifi access has websense filtering which is configured to block every potentially interesting site on the entire Internet.
After a half hour of not being able to assess the netbook’s capability, I walked across the mall to an Apple Store and got my very first Mac: the 11" Macbook air.
Oh, and yeah the cold colder joints on the power jack is an easy fix for a first semester tech school student, provided you can get the thing open and expose the circuit board well enough.
A new wife every eight months for $40? Damn!
This.
What happened to the fun answers?
Up your ass.
Does anyone else keep reading their alerts for updates as being to a thread titled, “Eat Shit and Die, Sonny”?
If only Zippo made laptop computers. I have a very old Zippo lighter that was damaged. I contacted Zippo about service. They sent me an address to send it. I was worried that the cost would exceed what I wanted to invest in the lighter. No worry. They repaired and returned this 30 year old lighter looking brand new.
