Eating grapefruit

I used to be that way until Prilosec came into my life. Now, as long as I take one pill per day, I can eat and drink whatever I want. Orange juice with pizza? Why not?

Previous thread with a lot of good information on grapefruit/drug interactions.

I voted yuck. Why do people want to eat fruit that is bitter?

I used to like Fresca, though, but I am not allowed anything containing grapefruit now because of my cholesterol medicine. No great loss.

I peel and eat it like an orange. I also peel the membrane off each section, as it tends to be thicker than orange membrane. This does add to the time and effort involved.

Peel, section, eat, YUM!!!

Sprinkle a little sugar! Sweetness plus bitterness equals offsetting parameters!

I always make supremes. Yes, it is labor-intensive, but then I get to sit down and enjoy my membrane-free citrus in all its glory.

That’s very cool, Oslo. I’d seen the finished products, but never the step by step instructions. I’m going to try it this weekend.

I have a pair of $13 grapefruit spoons for just this reason. Anything else is too much work. Cut in half, sprinkle some stevia sweetener on each half, then dig each segment out with the spoon.

I do this too; I haven’t peeled a grapefruit in quite a while. I’m sure that I’m just as fast with the knife now as I used to be with peeling, especially given the time devoted to picking off bits of pith and spitting out seeds and gnarly membranes.

Protip: after the peel has been cut away and the grapefruit is shaped like a squat barrel, use a narrow knife to remove the segments. Cut toward the center of the grapefruit along one side of a segment, trying to stay close to the membrane. When you reach the center, instead of removing the knife and cutting in along the other side, just twist the knife toward the uncut side and scrape it back along the opposite membrane. The segment will almost always just pop out of its own accord, saving you a second knife cut. This also seems to dislodge the seeds.

Seconded.

Mmmmm… grapefruit.

I’m a pulp sucker. Shoot, I don’t even eat (as in chew and swallow) most of the pulp. It’s more of a step above high-pulp juice. I don’t remove the rind and eat the section whole. I just put the wedge in my mouth, chomp, suck and once all the juice is out, discard.

When I was growing up, my family used option 1.

After I was living on my own, I bought grapefruit spoons and used those.

But I haven’t had grapefruit for years. IIRC the last time I did I couldn’t find my grapefruit spoons, so I tried a regular teaspoon. Turns out that that worked almost as well.

Somewhere I have a recipe that involves chicken breasts and grapefruit segments (in a saute?). If I find it, I will post it.

After you have removed the sections with a spoon, it is mandatory that you pick up the grapefruit and place it in the palm of your hand. Then squeeze so that juice runs into your spoon. You can get several spoonfuls and a sticky hand. It’s so good!
