Eclipse

It’s just started… you watching?

Judges 14:9 - So [Samson] scraped the honey into his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey out of the body of the lion.

Been peeking out at it from time to time. It’s just now starting here. It’s about 10:15 pm EST here.

(Yawns) It’s too cold or too windy or cloudy or maybe there are buildings in the way.

We’re on our way to a friend’s house – he’s an astronomer for JPL – and we’re gonna have an eclipse party!

Yes, I looked outside.

[grumble] All I can see is white stuff falling from the sky, and the glow from parking lot lights three miles away. Dammit, I’ve been waiting forever to see this thing. Grrrrr. [/grumble]

Jeremy…

Nobody ever calls me after they’ve done something smart.

I just checked. It’s halfway across at 9:41 central time. Cool.

Hmm. AOL and the SDMB seem to be 8 minutes apart.

Talera and I have been peeking out. We’re going out again in about 5 minutes when it should be at its peak. Nifty-keeno.

It looks incredible… 3/4 across

We are, each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another

incredible!

I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!

No view in Central Iowa…too many clouds. Damn it.

“…being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage.”

Right now it looks like a burnt orange marble.

Hop on over Chris, its absolutely amazing from here.

Not too impressive from San Francisco … too many clouds.

Hello…old Doper looking for you guys.

What am I replying to?

I just got back from the observatory, where I saw the best view of the moon I have ever seen through a telescope. The problem with full moons is that they are too bright to see through a telescope… unless there’s an eclipse, which there just happened to be. The skies were clear, the countryside was dark, prime viewing conditions all 'round. I’m going to go out and look at it some more now.

An infinite number of rednecks in an infinite number of pickup trucks shooting an infinite number of shotguns at an infinite number of road signs will eventually produce all the world’s great works of literature in Braille.

what makes them too bright?

couldn’t you add a neutral density filter to the telescope or something?

Well, it’s long over now. The next one, the longest and last of the 20th Century, is in July. In the western hemisphere, the partial phase of the eclipse will be visible in Alaska, Pacific Time Canada & US, Mexico, and southern South America. By the time totality begins, only SW Alaska will be able to see it.

However, if you’re in Australia, you’ll have a great view as it’ll pass directly overhead Queensland, Northern Territory, and Western Australia during its last 2 hours.
