According to this post (and the entire thread makes for good reading on this subject), over five years, the SDMB has cost the Chicago Reader (and remember, this is with NO appreciable benefit to the company) over $100,000. That averages to about $20,000 a year, and almost $1700 a month.
Now what was that about not being a lot of money?

And try asking a business on the level of the Chicago Reader, or heck, even Microsoft, “would you spend $20,000 a year on something that gives you absolutely no revenue or tangible benefit whatsoever?” and see how many say yes.
