Editing a Google Sites site outside of Google Sites

I started a website at Google Sites. I tried to put a paypal payment button on the site, and it turns out Google Sites doesn’t allow html form commands, so the paypal button code doesn’t work. Same for the Google Checkout button!

So it looks like I shouldn’t have used Google Sites.

But I don’t know if there’s any way to take the domain name I registered using Google Sites and edit pages under that domain without using Sites’ tools.

In other words, right now, I don’t see a way to edit pages under the domain I registered except by going through Google Sites.

They explicitly don’t allow you to simply upload pages to Google Sites. You have to use their editor, and you have to do it all online.

Sorry if that didn’t make good sense. All clarificatory questions are welcome.

Okay, I’ve gone and educated myself somewhat.

I can transfer the domain name just by signing up with a different webhost. (Right?)

So…

Who’s a good webhost? Is this a pretty good place for assessing webhosts?

Check your PMs. Offered some help that involves knowing your domain name.

If someone has a link to a quick guide on how to transfer my domain out of a Google page, I’d love to see it. I too signed up for a Google site, then registered the domain elsewhere. I tried to access the Google admin features so I add the new [tech mumbo jumbo] that I got from the new web host, but got confused and frustrated.

I’m pretty tech savvy, but it seems like, in this one instance, Google isn’t easy to use.

Sateryn if you have your domain name registered somewhere else, you’re good to go.

Sign up with another host (Frylock chose GoDaddy…other recommended hosts are 1and1.com and dreamhost.com) and they will give you instructions on what nameserver(s) to point your domain name to.

You’ll need to log in to your registrar account (where you registered the domain name) and change the nameservers to match what your host said.

Once that is all done - it could take up to 48 hours to propagate but can take as little as 30 minutes - your domain name will be pointed to the new host and you’ll no longer be with Google Sites.

As to how to get your actual HTML pages from Google Sites…I have no clue. Hopefully you have local copies on your computer?

Hmm… I never got instructions about nameservers. They just said they’d put int he request to my old host to effect the transfer, and once they heard back from them, the transfer would be done.

I went through justhost.com, and they said it would be easiest for me to just log in and do it myself, and sent me the info.

Little did I know that someone (me?) had locked out the admin features on my Google site, and had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get them accessable again.

Sateryn bought his domain name on his own, separate from signing up for Google Sites. Frylock, I believe, took a whole “package deal.”

Some registrars are good about being able to “take care of it” when it comes to other registrars. I would imagine that GoDaddy and Google are that sort of pair.

Best practice, tho, is to always get your domain name separate from your Web host so you can be in full control.

And, Frylock, even though you have the same Host and Registrar (Godaddy) you should have no problems cancelling hosting if you ever need to and still be in charge of your registrar account with GoDaddy, where you can manipulate your domain name settings at will.

I love 1and1 and never had issues with them.
