Eek! What is this big insect?

For the past couple of weeks, we’ve had BIG insects flying around.

They haven’t been aggressive to us, and more often than not, they’ve been flying in pairs, one after the other, as if they’re courting. They frequently fly into windows with a solid “thonk!” which makes me wonder just how good those eyes really are.

They’re a bit frightening because they’re so big. This one in my back yard is resting on some 1/4" metal rod, so the overall length is formidable at about an inch and a quarter.

Big-assed wasp. Cicada killer to be more precise.

Eep! Not to hijack this into Cafe Society territory but since the question has been ably answered, looking at that picture immediatley brought to mind some movie with things that looked just like that but on a humongous scale. Anyone know what I’m talking about? “The Mist” maybe?

If you value your sanity, don’t google image search “asian giant hornet,” which are as big if not bigger. In the same search you can also find an image of a person giving a mock-rectal exam to a dummy ass. Oh, GIS, where will you take us next?

Not Food of the Gods, right?
