Effect of early mail order catalogs on local businesses?

So, I was thinking about how the internet was supposed to have altered the way we all shopped and how all the brick and mortar stores were supposed to be empty, but that obviously hasn’t happened and arguably never will.

BUT, I recall reading that when Sears, et. al. started their catalog operations back in the 1800s, local stores were worried that they’d go under the onslaught. What was the effect on local economies? Did the stores go out of business? Did they simply lower their prices to compete?
