Effective Cover-up For Tattoos?

Just wondering if anyone knows of a product that covers, or nearly covers tattoos. Thanks.

Dermablend is a very thick, full coverage make-up designed for things like port wine birthmarks and can be used for tattoos (there are examples at the Before and After page). I’ve used it before and it’s kinda a pain (needs to go on thickly) but it does cover tattoos up. You can find it at most large department stores in the cosmetics section.

Thanks for that link! Pretty damn impressive. If you put it on an area that rubs on your collar, does it rub off easily?

I didn’t have problems with it rubbing off but I used it on my calf and not near clothing. You set it with powder so that may help the staying power. You’d probably want to test it before wearing it out the first time.

I have to ask. Job interview?

Clothing?

My first thought was formal event, because I have two tattoos and business wear covers both of them nicely … formal wear, though, is a different story, and formal events are the only times I’ve ever found myself wishing to be able to temporarly cover one or both tattoos.

I’ll second dermablend. I’ve been using it for a long time, and it does a great job. Mostly it’s marketed for covering scars and birthmarks, but it works well on tattoos too. The only drawback is that it’s pretty expensive, but definitely worth it for what it does.

Make sure you get a sample first or speak to a sales person to help you get just the right shade. If you don’t get a really close match to your skin tone it will wind up looking really bad. There’s a powder you use to set it and it holds up pretty well. When you first try it it might feel a bit heavy, especially if you’re using it on your face but it’s not too bad, just different from normal makeup. It’s a bit paste-like but if you warm it up briefly with a hairdryer, or take a small bit out and rub it in the palm of your hand it will melt a little bit and make spreading it easier.

I use MAC makeup. I first moisturize with a ton of lotion, then I smear myself with MAC concealer (use a lot). Then I follow up with a healthy coating of MAC Studio Fix (it’s powder with foundation in it-- stage makeup) that I apply with the sponge (normally I use a brush on my face, but the sponge puts a ton on). Blend blend blend.

No more tats. Oh, and mine are mostly black and get covered completely. As far as sealing it, Benefit sells a makeup sealer you can use. Or, if I’m being cheap, I just spray the area with a ton of hairspray.

Clothing that covers the midriff? Higher slung jeans?

Well, 3M makes duct tape…

The one time I needed to cover up my tattoo I used Ben Nye professional (as in, used in movies and on Broadway) stage makeup. Worked like a charm, but it can get expensive.

I’m not sure what the availability is like for the public. At the time I worked at a professional costume shop, so I had it available to me. And even if I hadn’t worked there, my union (The International Alliance of Theatre and Stage Employees) would have been able to get it for me.

No, I was just curious. My son is heavily tattooed and I was wondering if he had to move into a job that would frown on that sort of thing, would there be a product available.
Has anyone here had one lasered off? How bad is the scarring? What’s the cost?

I tried dermablend and stage makeup to cover my tattoo once and neither worked. They did make it look faded, but I just looked heavily made up with a faded tattoo, not the best look. But my tattoo has bright colors in it so that could be my problem.

I sometimes think about getting mine lasered off too, but again the bright colors are going to make it hard, I think. Ah well, the only time I think about it at all is at formal events and it’s not like it’s an offensive or risque tattoo or anything.

Considering my impression of Kalhoun, I’d have guessed Sports Illustrated cover shoot.

Yeah, if they have a recliner competition or Slacker Olympics!

Hey girlie, I can help you!!

My DH had a woman’s bust/torso on his inner forearm that looked nothing like me and had better boobs. Bitch hadda go. Before our first son was born he started with the lasering. It cost, IIRC, 'tween $350-$450 for each session. He says he had five. After just chatting with him, he said it would probably take two more sessions for it to be completely gone. Now, she’s just a faint not-solid outline from the green (which is the WORST for removal) that she once was outlined in.

His skin on the arm (very tender, being inner arm) is pretty darn smooth. I’d have expected it to be more scar-y. There’s just one small 1/2" round bump that’s slightly noticable.

I’m very glad he stepped up to the plate on this one. I think that with little men in the house that a naked woman on daddy’s arm was kinda inappropriate. I did/do not want my sons objectifying women in that manner. I think it was probaby the single-most idiotic thing my DH ever did (prior to knowing me - he’s done lots more stupid stuff!)!

Thanks for the info on that! Very expensive…pretty much unattainable for folk like me and Kid Kalhoun (not that he would consider it…he’s a tattoo junkie). But he has a couple really shitty ones on his neck. I have no idea what he was thinking. Maybe if I hit a big lotto I’ll throw him a couple bucks so he can clean the canvas.

I just don’t get the whole “manly-man” aspect of tattoos. I was adamantly opposed to them for many years. DH had some that obviously weren’t professionally done. I swear, he must’ve thought “what completely stupid thing can I engrave permanantly into my skin”. When we met, he had the Bitch, he had a stupid “Bad Boy” on his left upper arm, he had “Mom & Dad” on the other inner forearm (sooooo stupid) and he had a hideous crown-like thing on his right upper arm. Idiot.

He covered the “bad boy” with a cool round design that’s alternately a smiling/grimacing sun - it actually looks pretty decent. He covered “mom & dad” with some swirling designs and changed it to my & our kids’ names. It was the best they could do, considering. It still looks better (and has better meaning now) than it did. Idiot. But he’s still a honkin’ momma’s boy.

And, yes, it was VERY expensive. Over $2K. IMO, worth every cent. I must mention though, in July of 2005 I got a hair up my ass and got an anklet. I love it. It’s a vine of pink hearts that looks nice. I’ve not yet seen it under pantyhose though. I imagine that image will be a little disconcerting at say, a funeral. Oh well.

Have a great day, hon! Thanks for your email - I’m glad you can now understand my ramblings on the board from it.
