I won’t say I hate Morrowind but honestly it’s not all that great. It just seems like a bunch of side missions without any real plot. Would I enjoy Oblivion or Skyrim?
The main plot in Morrowind is definitely the slowest to get going out of three, but the Elderscrolls games have always been about all the little side quests and discoveries, so it’s not like that changes.
That is pretty much the Bethesda model. The plot is secondary or Tertiary. they have better graphics and different settings, Roman-ish(+other planes) and Viking-ish medieval instead of weirdo-freak-land. But the core of the game design is the same.
The Morrowind narration is not very sophisticated my modern standards but I will dispute that it’s “without any real plot.” The true meat of the series is in the (very optional) books, of course, but the main plot is good if you have the tenacity to stick with it. It’s very, very, easy to get distracted with side quests.
Oblivion has the weakest plot of the three. Mostly standard “save the world from evil,” though it has less of the “Chosen One” trope. The consequences of the plot (the story between it and Skyrim) is pretty big, but not much of it happens in game.
People adore it and it was great at the time it came out. I strongly recommend you skip Oblivion and play Skyrim. First of all, all the dialogue is voice acted, which really brings things to life. Secondly, they fixed a lot of problems over two games and it really does play a lot better.
Morrowind is fun but it was the first of the “Modern” games and they learned a lot from it. The others have better game play IMO.
Morrowind did have the most interesting setting though I think.
Skyrim. Less bugs (considering Bethesda) and more streamlined/less clunky combat, plus I believe there is an add-on or DLC that brings one of the Islands from Morrowind back so you can get your fill there. Plus, you know, Dragons!
The modern games are still remarkably bug-free, considering the size. I should know, I’ve played Daggerfall, which IIRC had a game breaking bug in the initial release. And patches weren’t easy to get back then.
Thats the Dragonborn add-on. It has some callbacks to Morrowind but you dont NEED to play the latter first.
anomalous1, I thought you meant literal bugs, like the giant ones you ride around in, and was confused because of the chauruses in Skyrim…
LOL, I meant the speech glitches and saving glitches to be honest, probably been patched since I last plated. Silt striders would have been cool to see in Skyrim though, but actually walking around, maybe dragons fighting them.
Vvardenfell, the setting of Morrowind, was just released as an expansion pack for Elder Scrolls Online. It’s a lot more playable than the original, and it’s pretty neat to see the setting in better detail.
The Dragonborn DLC has one (1) silt strider. It’s stationary.
remember the other thing that made morrowind great is it was the first pc or wrpg on a console (original xbox)since the 16 bit era …
