Electric/Gas Scooters/Mopeds -- Need Advice

My 16-year-old son has a summer job about 3 miles from our house!!! (Yay!!) I have been wondering about scooters / mopeds for him to for going to and from work.

The idea of an electric scooter appeals to him (and me). But we have never used one and don’t know anything about how reliable or sturdy they may or may not be. I’ve looked around on the net, and places like Target sell them (their listings say “web only”). But I have never heard of most of the brands.

Gas mopeds are probably longer-lasting and more sturdy, but they’re more expensive and seem to go much faster. All we need is something to go 3 miles each way, every day through the summer. I’d like it to last at least a couple of years.

How practical an idea is this? Does anyone out there have experience with these things? Do they fall apart or can you depend on them? Or would it be better in the long run to get a moped?

(Yes, I know he should be able to use a regular bicycle for this, but that’s another issue entirely…)

p.s. – We’d like it to have a seat (not a stand-up scooter).

      • Well you put a cute phrase where your location should be–so I can’t look for specific laws concerning your locale, or even really comment, as laws are different everywhere, especially in different countries. I know a couple things about US laws concerning this subject, but if you’re not in the US that doesn’t matter.

So what is wrong with a bicycle? Why can’t your son pedal for himself?

We’re in Massachusetts (USA).

Ah, that explains it.

I’m not asking for legal advice or childrearing advice. I am asking for the pros and cons of the two types of vehicle, as well as for various brands within each category.
