Electric hearing protection for shooting

In your experience, how well do the electric muffs that claim to block out noises above a certain decibel range while amplifying noises below a certain range work?

For example:

Are they like welding helmets, where buying a cheap one may sometimes result in the occasional exposure to what you are trying to protect yourself from?

How much would you need to pay to get a decent one?

I believe they operate by amplifying regular sounds up to a certain decibel level, once that level has been exceeded, the speakers/amplifiers shut down for a few seconds

I have an inexpensive set of Caldwell hearing protectors, they have a 25dB noise reduction rating, they’re fine for small-to-medium sized firearms or low-pressure rounds (.22LR, .22 WMR, .17HMR, 9MM, .38 Special, 20 gauge,) but they are noticeably less effective than my standard hearing protectors (Howard Leight L3’s) that reduce 35dB, especially with larger caliber firearms (7.62x39, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, 12-gauge, .223, .308, .30/06, .30-30, etc…)

for the bigger guns, it’s better to double-up protection, use both foam squishies and earmuff style, even if you’re using electronic hearing protection

If I’m going to the range with my small caliber arms, I’ll use my electronics, if I’m using my larger arms, I’ll take my standard muffs and foam squishies
