I was on a working ranch and there was this twine that gave me a shock. WTF?! This twine had a wire running through it carrying a current as a form of cow control. I was thinking of this as a form of dog control so what do I ask for or look for on the internet or farm supply store?
Electric fence
But it wasn’t a fence. It was a string along the ground. I guess cows stepped on it and then shied back.
I’m surprised it would be effective. I’ve never heard of this. I am suprised it works on cows but there’s no way it would work on dogs. They’d jump over it.
Are you sure it wasn’t just a fallen down electric fence?
electric fence needs to be suspended and insulated from the ground and supports. there is electric fence material that has a thin wire running through a fabric. it may be this fallen off its supports.
there is buried cable for dog control with shock collars which wouldn’t shock a person by touching that cable (which is hard round).
Electric fence tape like this? Still not supposed to lie on the ground. The neat thing about it is that thanks to the bright colour, once your beasties get used to being shocked by it, you can often leave it anywhere you want them to avoid without turning it on!

Fleet Farm have a go at it.
Thanks. I think I have a good handle on it now. The situation is a chainlink backyard fence about 2-3 feet too short for our needs. Would there be any problem electrically tying in the fence to the ground of the energizer with a live wire about 6" above it then alternating ground and live?
This is a standard way to wire an electric fence - it helps deter jumpers.
You need to install the correct drivers (most scanners come with them), then choose the operation you’re interested in and select (typically) File>Twine>Acquire.
What?

Got a 100 lbs Akita. Nice thick coat too. Like all akitas, she’s stubborn and borderline retarded. I need enough juice to trigger the adversion of fence=bad but it takes a bit to get her attention. I’m afraid that 0.5 joules is not enough so I’m looking at 1.0j but I don’t wan’t to fry the dog or kids or give her a heart attack. Any ideas on how much power I should put into the fence. 6 strand poly twine (not tape) if that makes a difference.
fence chargers are set to deliver a nonharmful but painful shock to and animal and people.
hang slices of bacon on the fence on all the sides, the dog will learn to avoid the fence, at least for a while. i don’t think aversion to bacon will last more than a few seconds.
But should I use 0.5j or 1.0j or something else?
when a wet dog nose and tongue contacts the bacon either should be good.
thick dog fur and jumping, to be in the air at fence contact, could make even a larger charger not effective. baiting the fence does train an aversion to the spot.
Yes, my sister once protected her flower bed by putting electric fence wire around it. The dogs knew an electric fence when they saw one, and stayed out of her flower bed.
shes a climber. without the electrical fence she would put her front paws on the fence and climb out
