Mostly direct deposit/payment. I love the system in place here: either I can arrange to pay my bills automatically each month through the bank (free), or I can pay all my bills at the local convenience store (also free). I haven’t written a check in over seven years.
My full-time job and my weekend wedding jobs both direct deposit. Teaching pays cash.
No electronic failures or horror stories, but one near-miss with traditional transfers. I had $400 postal order sent through the mail overseas. Unbeknownst to me, my broker’s firm stopped accepting overseas checks. Had this been an ordinary check, there wouldn’t have been any problem, but as a postal order, I had already paid the $400 to the post office, and couldn’t get a refund unless I had the check. It took about 6 weeks before my broker tracked down the check and sent it back.
All but two: one because the cable company screwed up and cancelled it twice, so I pay manually, and once because I get an instant payment bonus (so I pay manually as soon as the bill arrives).
I pay all monthly bills using electronic banking.
As mentioned above, my cable company buggered up my direct debit so I pay manually now, but apart from that no transaction failures.
No horror stories.
First year of electronic banking? I think it was 1999.
Last time I physically went to a bank was to pay some cheques in after last Christmas.
I get direct deposit whenever possible–my last job was with the federal government, and fed employees are required to have DD, though I would have had it regardless. I bank with USAA, so DD works much better for me, since they don’t have local branches and I would have to mail in deposits.
I have a few bills automatically debited: my auto insurance, student loan payment, and cell phone. Everything else I pay online manually. A couple of accounts I don’t even get paper bills for any more, I just get my statements online either at their website or via email.
I did write checks for my utilities at my last apartment, because the bills were being split, so auto debit wouldn’t have worked (everything was in my name, so I could have had the bills debited and had my roomies pay me by check, but that would have been more of a pain than it was worth).
I haven’t had any problems at all with online or auto-payment.
I started doing bill-paying online about two years ago, I think. First direct deposit was way back when I was in the Navy, over 10 years ago.
I can’t even recall the last time I needed to go inside a bank to transact business. Two years or more.
Do you direct-deposit your paycheck?
Yes. What monthly bills do you direct-debit?
Mobile phone and son’s tuition. Do you pay any monthly bills online?
Yes, all of them. If the company doesn’t accept electronic transactions, my bank prints a check, plops it in an envelope and mails it to the company for me. I’ve even payed for eBay auctions this way. Suffice it to say, it takes me a long time to go through a book of checks. Ever have an electronic banking transaction fail?
Nope. Any personal electronic banking horror stories?
Well, not really horror but my son’s former school debited tuition payment for three months before I, by chance, noticed it. I sent a letter and they remedied the situation immediately. First year you ever direct-deposited, direct-debited or paid a bill online?
Not sure on the first one but I’ve been paying bills online since my bank offered the service, 2000.
**Last time you ever set foot in a bank? **
I was in the bank last month because I lost my debit card and I needed an ATM card to use until I got a new one in the mail. My bank issues ATM cards on the spot. Before that…wow, I can’t remember!
I pay everything online, with one exception: rent. When I started doing the online payment thing, I had trouble scheduling payments - I put in the date the bill was due, not the date I wanted them to begin processing it (it’s ~5 days for my bank). This led to e-checks going to the landlord when there was no money in the account, and that led to the landlord telling me they’d only accept money orders.
Which leads to the next part - when’s the last time I set foot in a bank? Well, because I have to do the money order thing for the rent, I will go inside the branch, withdraw the rent in cash, then go to a Shoppers grocery store and get money orders for 50 cents each (the bank’s a lot more expensive), then pay the rent with the money orders.

Yes. I love it - I don’t rush to the bank - it’s deposited usually before the paper checks are issued, and it works when I’m out of town.
What monthly bills do you direct-debit?
Cable & a loan payment. Someday I’ll move them to a scheduled payment I send rather than one that they pull. I like being in control.
Do you pay any monthly bills online?
Almost all of my bills are paid online now.

First year you ever direct-deposited, direct-debited or paid a bill online?
I’ve been doing direct deposit for more than 10 years. I’ve only paid bills this way for the past year or so.
**Last time you ever set foot in a bank? **
Last week. I got a disbursement from an account that arrived in the form of a check. I’ve still got a hang-up with ATM deposits. The fine print makes it sound like it could be a long time before it shows up.
Do you pay any monthly bills online?
– Yes, ever since a bank teller made a mess, I feel much more comfortable with a more do-it-yourself approach
Ever have an electronic banking transaction fail?
– No.

– Not quite a result of e-banking, but rather stupid bank computers:
My student loan payment is due the last day of every month. So on February 28, I made a payment. Two weeks later, the bank called to say I’d missed a payment and was in arrears. Me:“What??? Did I miss January???” Bank:“No. Our computers show that you have missed your Febuary payment.” Me:“No I didn’t, I paid it on time. When does the computer say I made my last payment.” Bank:“February 28.” Me:“Right then, so I’m up to date.” Bank:“Our computers show that you have missed a payment.” Me:"… Okay, I don’t understand. When does your computer say this ‘missing payment’ was due?" Bank:“It was due on February 31.” Me:waiting a few moments to see if she’d figured out what she’d just said… “So, tell me… How many days are in the month of February?” Bank:confused pause… “Um… Twenty-eight…” Me:“Right then, so I made my payment on the last day of the month, on schedule, and I’m up to date.” Bank:confused pause… “…Our computers show that you have missed a payment…” :smack:
First year you ever direct-deposited, direct-debited or paid a bill online?
– Don’t remember
Last time you ever set foot in a bank?
– Regularly for business.
I love direct deposit and direct debit. I also use my credit card for lots of stuff, and pay that bill online. As much as I can, I do automatically.
Unfortunately I do need to go into the bank once a week to make a deposit for my part-time job. Other than that, I never go in to a bank for my personal stuff! The only reason to go into a bank is to get a problem solved. And even then, I’d probably start with the 1-800 number.
Yes, but my wife doesn’t have that option (she’s self-employed)
Phone, utilities, cable, and we’re about to do our mortgage payment as well.
Yes, our credit card.
Yes, but we’re good about checking to make sure it goes through, so we caught it. It hasn’t been a recurring problem, though.
The only one is Verizon, who continue to send us statements that say our account has been paid automatically, and then a late notice saying we haven’t paid the last invoice. We’ve called again and again, but they’re still working on it. “Can you hear me now, M-----F-----s!?!”
My wife did it all the time with former employers, so hard to say. Quite a while ago.

Last week, to get a money order to send in for an aBay auction. I used to pick them up at Cub Foods for $0.19 but I can get 'em for no charge at my bank.
