Anyway, back to farming.
Our first desalination plant goes on line in a few months, it’s not enough to save agriculture here, but it’s a start. They are saying it will supply 300,000 homes. ALso, water reclamation projects are starting in San Diego county. They will expand beyond producing water for agricultural use. That might be a tough sell though.
Yeah France would never agree to such a rule. They are the biggest meat eaters on the planet and vegetarian is a dirty word.
How did you lose your usually clear focus? The issues of factory farming and vegetarianism are NOT opposite sides of an argument. The ancient Greeks had it right when they wrote about meals being flavored with meat. Our problem today, is that we flavor meat meals with a small number vegetables and grains, instead of the opposite. We can be:
Healthy;
Consume enough protein;
Elimiated the horrors of factory farming;
NOT be forced to be vegetarians; and
Spend about the same on food as we do now.
Moderation is the key. We eat so much meat not because we need it but because factory farming has dropped the cost of meat and because the meat providers have marketed their wares so well.
Actually, one can make a good argument that eating meat, at least in excess, does kill people. It just takes longer. Smoking doesn’t destroy your lungs or heart overnight either, and alcohol takes it’s time destroying your liver. But criminalizing alcohol didn’t work. Prohibition didn’t last long. Didn’t prevent the government from trying it though. And who would have thought Bloomberg would try to ban large sodas either? Governments don’t always employ rational thought when writing laws. The nanny state never saw a bad law.
But reducing meat consumption back to the levels that could be supported by more rational natural family farm free range practices could be achieved, and the resulting meat would be healther for us. Such a move more likely would be fostered by new knowledge from the medical and health communities such as found at newstartclub.com than from government mandates.
If you believe the Bible, man has only been eating meat for about 4500 years. The diet in the garden of Eden was vegetarian. And the diet in the new heaven and earth will be vegetarian also, even for the lion.
Yeah, well, I don’t believe in the Bible, and I suspect humans and their predecessors have been opportunistic meat-eaters for millions of years.
I would go even further and say that eating meat is what made us human.
We are very strange creatures in many ways. Our jaws are too weak to chew and our intestinal track is too short to digest most vegetable matter. However, if we cook food, we can digest it.
Because we started to cook our food, we no longer needed the large guts found in other apes. We could run faster and hunt better. Because our jaw muscles were no longer anchored to the top of our head, our brain had room to grow.
Meat is highly concentrated calories and protein. It allowed us to feed our growing brain. Without a massive gut, we became more agile and were able to hunt. We see these changes take place between Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus. Hablis was small in stature, had an ape like body, and its brain case was 1/2 the size of a modern human. Although it had a larger brain case than Australopithecus, it was still in the realm of ape size.
Homo Erectus was a hunter, and over its 200,000 year period of its existence, the size of the brain grew from Hablis size to almost modern proportions. It was a rapid and very speedy development in evolutionary time.
Large brains are not necessarily survival advantages. The human brain takes 25% of our caloric intake to function. You can’t develop a large brain without access to those calories. If you don’t need it, it’s better for the brain to get smaller. However, if a large brain can help you hunt down those calories from a neighboring wildebeest, that brain could be an advantage.
We probably eat way too much meat much the way we eat way too much processed sugar. Our bodies were evolved to crave things that were good for us, but very, very difficult to get. If you merely liked meat just a little bit, you’re not going to try to bring down something that’s way bigger than you and has sharp horns and teeth. Craving meat so much meant we thought getting some was worth the danger.
However, now hunting down meat means going down to the local grocery store and picking up a package. Due to factory farms, it’s cheap. Its so cheap in fact that we no longer bothering eating the organs of animals. The result is that we eat way more than what is probably good for us. This is why we want 1/3 pound burgers and 32 ounce sirloins.
Eliminating factory farms doesn’t necessarily mean banning the eating of meat. We’ll have to buy less and eat less because the price is way up. It might even make us healthier. However, as Nixon found out, the voting public gets very, very upset when they can no longer afford to put meat on the table on a daily basis.
Any politician who tries to eliminate factory farming will find their career to be rather short. Might as well run on the platform to raise taxes or require mandatory daily doses of cod liver oil.
