Email from "Nobody" ?

Twice in the past couple of weeks I’ve received emails with “Nobody” in the From field. There is no message, just a blank page when I open it. My first thought is that it’s a spammer looking for valid addresses, hoping to prompt the receiver into replying.

Any other ideas? Has anyone else received this email?

Note that if the message is HTML, rather than plain text, it can contain stuff even if you cannot see it. A common trick is to display/link to a picture but make it only 1x1 pixel. This lets the other side know the page was viewed/opened.

Check the source code and headers of the email to see exactly what it contains.

It could be that the email was sent through an anonymizing email service such at Anonymouse. I think if mixmaster software is used for the anonymizing, the From field will read “nobody@nowhere.com.”

Haj

Looks like sailor nailed it - I have virtually no knowledge of HTML but when I viewed the source it looks like the link described is there. It came from Great Britain, where I have no friends or acquaintances.

Damn. Why couldn’t it be from a statuesque redhead with a secret crush on me?

I get those al the time as well. They filter striaight to my “bulk” mail where they are promptly deleted w/o viewing.
