It’s very convenient (and cheap) to have an internet-based email account as with Yahoo, Gmail, etc. However, I don’t like giving them access to my PC, address book, emails, etc, to say nothing of all the advertising. I also want to eliminate changing email addresses if for some reason I move and have to change cable providers. I’m willing to incur some expense to get what I want.
How about I purchase/register a domain name (ie: www.tim.org) and host it with an ISP that offers a basic package of services, to include email/web-mail. I figure this would provide the security and independence I’m looking for. As competitve as hosting is, it should be all that costly.
Thanks, Duckster. The GoDaddy option looks like it’s just what the doctor ordered. It’s pretty cheap. Can’t help but wonder if the price is what it is because there’s advertising. Might you know?
Google does not use your address book for advertisements, the whole system is automated. All you have to do is add adsense and google analytics to your hosts file and you do not have to worry. Pages even load faster. If you are on chrome or firefox both offer addons to do just that. I do not see why you would pay for a service that you can get for free at great quality. Hell turn your PC into a messaging server.
They certainly do not access your PC where did you get that info?
Although I will admit some of the stuff I see online is uncanny. For years all the ads I got where for tech stuff. One day I get a tooth pulled and a prescription for 10mg norco, a week later i start getting spam emails for vicodin.
