Lately I’ve been getting spam emails with a spoofed “from” address that’s in the name of a small web host provider I still use for a couple websites, so it’s in this form: bogusaddress@mywebhostname.com
My question is, how does the spammer know to spoof that domain name to spam me? Should I be concerned that either my computer or my webhost have been compromised and email address info collected? I don’t know how else the spammer would know to use that specific address.
Do you know anyone else who uses that domain and has emailed you in the past? Chances are that someone stole their contact list. Or they could have broke into you account to get your list.
If nothing else, change your password to that site. Even then it might be too late. My daughter’s Yahoo account was compromised a couple of years ago and I still get emails with her name spoofed.
It’s the best kind of spam, since the first time you actually think it’s a legit email. However, you are just getting that email as well, like any other email address that is on that spammers list.
If an email address is known to a spammer, they spam it – spammers use legit email addresses to spam you with it – it’s awesome if you get spam from your own email address.
Spammers crawl websites, directories, etc…. to get email addresses to spam to and to spam from.
This does not necessarily mean, that your or your buddies email account has been hacked.
It is advisable to change your password regularly, if you use an online email provider like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc…
