Emergency Skype Question

In the job-interview process that never runs out of hoops, I’ve found another one. This is after they flew me across the country to interview, then didn’t have time to see me because of a crisis, so I got back on the plane.

Now they’re still interested, but they want to do the interview via Skype. Fair enough - they’ve already wasted a bunch of money on a plane ticket. I got told to get a Skype number and they’ll set up the time and we’ll do the interview.

OK. I find a BestBuy that will let me in after closing, buy the webcam, set it up and go to getting the Skype number. It asks me what country I want the number in. I pulldown to US. It asks me which state. I pulldown to…waitaminute. Iowa isn’t listed. What? I look again. Iowa is as not-there as before.

So how do I get the Skype number?

I don’t think it matters - they can call you using your Skype name instead of a number

Are you sure they need you to have a number? Or just an account? The “online number” system is something that allows people on a regular telephone to chat with you on your computer, and is (AFAIK) voice-only. From what I’ve been able to find online, these phone numbers aren’t available in all area codes. It’s also subscription-based.

Videoconferencing, on the other hand, just requires a free online account — no “telephone” number required, since everything is transmitted via the Internet. All the “Skype interviews” I’ve done have used this method instead.

Well, I’ll check. It may be that she said “Skype number” when she really meant “Skype account.”
