Emilia Clarke, nudity, GOT, contracts, etc.

She… renegotiated her contract?

It happens all the time in a variety of fields.

I meant to say Qarth.

-scabpicker,
Who’s worked starkers as a model for art more often than not, and am always flattered that I’m asked, either way.
[/QUOTE]

Out of curiosity, do you own any nudes of yourself drawn from your modeling?

Maybe she did have a moral objection before, but she just didn’t have a strong enough moral objection to turn down that bread. And, now that she finally has the leverage to negotiate from a position of strength, she’s done exactly that.

People hold their nose and do things that go against their principles all the time for a paycheck. And when they have the opportunity to negotiate otherwise, they do.

Well, yes. And if she had renegotiated to get more pay, for instance, it would have been totally unremarkable. She likes money, and so she likes more money more. But why this particular renegotiation? Did she always object to the nudity (but not enough to turn down the job), as Reluctant A. suggests? Did she not object to it originally, but for some reason does now? If so, why?

Absolutely. Big corporations certainly don’t treat contracts as being set in stone; why should individual employees?

So long as you are prepared to accept the consequences of breach of contract, it’s a perfectly legitimate tactic to threaten breach. In cases like this, it’s to everyone’s benefit to renegotiate a contract and avoid breach, so there it is.

As I said before, production companies absolutely use their bargaining strength to their own advantage. More power to any individual employee who is in a position to return the favor.

Maybe millions upon millions of fan letters telling her how much they looked forward to seeing her boobs. It might have eventually skeeved her out and she doesn’t want to give them any more spank-fodder.

Mainstream actors like Theresa Russell (Whore), Kerry Fox (Intimacy), and Eva Green (The Dreamers) have all experienced either regret or career damage from doing what at the time was considered very explicit work in mainstream films.

That’s not even counting the scores of adult film actors who have essentially been blackballed from mainstream work.

In our society, there’s no question that this type of thing burdens women far more than it does men, so I would never second-guess a woman who decides she doesn’t want to do sexually explicit work any more, regardless of how willing she might have been in the past.

I’m quite surprised by the number of men who thing Emilia somehow owes them the sight of her tits. Says a lot about men and tits.

Do you believe that the majority of male posters in this thread have been expressing that opinion?

No.
ETA: In fact, many more expressed this opinion in the original GoT thread than in this one.

Of course she was. But that doesn’t mean that her decision isn’t hurting the show artistically.

It jolted me out of the story. But obvious attempts to hide nudity when it’s a very natural place to be nude always does. The l-shaped blanket. The forced cameral angles etc. They always feel so false and awkward. And it’s even more jolting when it’s on a show that hasn’t shied away from female nudity with an actress that has appeared nude earlier.

And yes, there is a double standard for men’s and women’s nudity. That will also take me out of a scene.

I still haven’t seen anything which suggests that she actually would have been in breach? Do we even know for sure that she was under contract when she negotiated her nevernude policy? It certainly doesn’t strike me as implausible that she could have been between contracts.

Whatever artistic “hurt” might be happening is exceedingly trivial.

I have no idea what her contractual status is at any particular time. I’m just saying if there’s a contract in force, then it’s still okay for her to change her mind and try to renegotiate.

Is that true on Eva Green??? Cause she seems to be allergic to clothes in Sin City 2 and that wasn’t too long ago.

Does it? I think it’s doubtful that an actress’ career is impeded more by a nude scene than an actor’s career.

What happens is that full frontal nudity of a male actor is exceedingly rare in movies/series (including in game of Thrones. I think I remember one, but I’m not even sure).

Full frontal nudity is equally rare for both sexes. Toplessness is more common for men than women. Both cases are roughly equivalent.

Emilia is within her rights to do whatever she likes, but I will say they haven’t dealt with it well in the show.

The scene with daario and her in bed it was really hard to believe them as two people in love, who’ve just had hot, passionate sex, while she was making a noticeable effort to stay covered. And in the recent ep (s06e03), my GF asked why we were seeing Dany’s back / sideboob, and I had to tell her the actress doesn’t do nude shots any more.

Hodor.
