I knew a lady who got Emmett Till on her pants when they exhumed him. Never came off…
Good point. It still makes me sick, to think of such a small, stupid act would lead to such a horrific demise.
As usual, Unregistered Bull, you seem to live up to your user name.
The story of Emmett Till isn’t that simply of a boy involved in mischief (which he arguably was). It is a story of heartbreak and courage, as crowmanyclouds notes with Medgar Evers’ story, and the story of a witness (Mose Wright?), who courageously identified Till’s murderers, at the risk of his own safety. And of course, Emmett’s mother, who provided the Civil Rights movement with the horrific images that spurred a lot of well-meaning, but disengaged people in American and around the world into action. (His body was so mangled the funeral was supposed to be closed-casket, but she fought to have the casket opened so people could see his mutilated body. The pictures appeared in Jet, and were seen around the US and the world.)
As an educator I agree with the professor at the end of the article. (It turns out that the fired teacher did her certification at CSU-DH, where I took some of my courses via distance.) It seems very sad that a compromise couldn’t be found. If the only message that came across was “Emmett Till was murdered for whistling at a White lady,” that’s very incomplete and a poor reading of the historical impact of that tragedy. Perhaps the real issue is that the teachers and the administrators had a very shallow knowledge of the Emmett Till case.
And clearly, whatever Emmett Till’s (alleged) misbehavior, it did not warrant a scintilla of the reaction from racists knuckle-draggers who tortured and killed a boy.
That’s the defining characteristic of school administrators.
It also accurately describes school boards.
You have to make allowance for cultural differences over time and place. I once saw in an Italian restaurant a B&W photo titled, “An American Girl in Italy.” It shows a pretty young woman walking down a street (could be at any time from the '30s to the ‘60s) past a crowd of men who are all openly leering at her. One is actually making come-hither gestures and saying something, presumably naughty. She is uncomfortably trying to ignore them. No doubt seeing that kind of thing makes feminists’ blood boil, but it was acceptable, even expected, behavior then and there. And, despite Southern manners and chivalry, it probably would have been almost acceptable in Mississippi in 1955 for a white man to whistle at a white woman in the street, and to be even ruder to a black woman.
I don’t believe what you just said, but go ahead and provide a link if you have one.
Even if it is true, the rest of what you said is absurd. Till was killed because he was black and (supposedly) did something black people didn’t do. He was tortured and killed to set an example. And racism prevented the men who killed him from being brought to justice, too.
My wife and I have that on our wall. Fantastic photo!
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.

Ironically, Emmett’s father was executed for raping and killing women in Italy.
I have this photo framed on my wall as well. Very creepy, and definitely not staged- at least it doesn’t look fake.
I too, have this framed photo on my wall. I would have never thought that this many dopers would have it!
Provide a cite that it’s false.
Sorry, loser, you don’t get to play that game. You called Till “a person that committed battery and was a wanton sexual harasser.” You’re the one who needs to put up, or shut up and go fuck yourself.
And, as Marley and others have noted, even if your assertions about Till were true, it still wouldn’t excuse the idiocy and ignorance of your subsequent conclusions regarding the murder.
Just some uppity nigger, huh?
I didn’t know there was a conflict. The sexual harassment and battery came from a pro-Till (or pro-prosecution) news article.
The cheapness is as usual comes from those that link a non-decent person, Till, with the same importance of the victims of racial crimes during that time. If Till’s bad behavior had manifested itself, then he wouldn’t have been killed. He wasn’t killed because he was registered to vote, sat at a White table, or went to the White City Park. He was killed because he admittedly sexually harassed a female.
Till deserved a beating even if it was just verbal sexual harassment. I’ve never said that he deserved death. I suspect that a White would have received one too. I don’t doubt that there is a strong possibility that he got worse because he was Black. By putting an indecent, sexual harasser on the same pedestal as other moral, decent victims, it cheapens the whole affair.
I don’t need to do nothing. You do. And it really doesn’t make a shit since it is freely admitted that he sexually harassed her. The idiocy is amongst those that put this indecent person on the same level with the decent ones.
No. I’m White. I do tend to be uppity when posting on the Net though. It’s a common affliction.
The idiocy is among those who seek to mitigate the crime of cold blooded murder based on racial hatred. And that’s you, moron.
So i guess he deserved it?
No, he was killed because he was a black person who allegedly sexually harassed a white woman. There was no trial regarding what he did or did not do to the woman; the people who killed him had nothing but allegations to go on. They assigned themselves judge, jury, and executioner, with no room for any argument or evidence.
Well, at least you openly admit your mental derangement. Physical assault is not an appropriate punishment for verbal assault (remember, if you’re going to claim physical assault, it’s you who needs to prove it, dickhead), and vigilantism is contrary to a civilized system of justice. At least that’s what intelligent, civilized people believe.
You really are too stupid for words.
The question in this whole issue is not even about what Till did or didn’t do. It’s about what those white people were willing to do to him, in defiance of all civilized ideas about justice, a fair trial, and the rights of the accused, because he was black.
The only thing cheap here is your moral compass. You might want to look into getting it replaced.
YOU were the one who claimed he assaulted her. Therefore, it’s up to YOU, jackass, to provide a site.
What news article? CITE?
Option A: Put up
Option B: Shut up
Option C: Demonstrate yourself to be an unmitigated asshat.
Actually option C is already off the table since you’ve already done that.
